I wonder why the name of the country is People's Republic of China then? Sure doesn't seem very republican to me.. if it is in the transitional phase, they could have renamed the country back in 1949 to a transitional people's republic.. or at least when the fanatical Maoists in the CPC were quited down.. but I forget that the CPC/PRC is exempt from telling the truth.

A republic is not necessarily a democracy.

Is the Democratic Republic of Congo democratic to you ? Usually countries that need to specify words like "democratic" in their name aren't. Nowadays, about all countries in the world are either monarchies or republics (depending if there is a president or king/emperor). That doesn't mean all countries are democratic, far from that. I could even be wondered if any really are.

No, Wang is right. India is probably more democratic than any other developing country in Asia. Even an outcaste managed to become president due to the large number of low-caste and outcaste voters. This is in a country where religion still forces the top-caste Brahmins to eat in separate restaurants food cooked (and touched) only by other Brahmins, and where people are expected to give their seat to a Brahmin (eg. in a train or waiting room), regardless of their age, sex or wealth.

Indian people are also freer to openly discuss politics or any social problem than in China or many S-E ASian countries.

Maciamo, are you saying that India is much freer than Thailand? I do think that Thailand is in a much better position politically than India is. Cambodia is behind them but slowly getting there. Same with Indonesia. I wouldn't say that India is the most democratic developing country in SE Asia. Thailand, still developing, is more democratic than India, I believe.
