Hello,

Please kindly help me with proper translation for the sentence below:

くびを かしげながら とを あけると そこには ぬけるように いろのしろい うつくしい むすめが たっておった。

I have translated it as:

Inclining his head, he opened the door, and beautiful woman in white color stood there, so that she came out from inside.

But I am not sure about ぬけるように. In fact, i have translated it as "clause of result" i.e. woman have came out from inside because, she was there. Maybe i did mistake.

Thank you very much! :sorry:

~ように can be translated "so that" or "as if".
In this context it means "as if".
ぬける means "to go through", and from this it also describe there's no obstruction to prevent something, and it continues for ever, i.e. clarity/transparency.

ぬけるように is a set phrase used to describe the blue sky or white, clear skin, i.e.
ぬけるように青(あお)い空(そら)
ぬけるように白(しろ)い肌(はだ)

くびをかしげる means to wonder - because it is the gesture one takes when one is wondering why.

くびを かしげながら とを あけろと そこには ぬけるように いろのしろい うつくしい むすめが たっておった。
He opened the door wondering (who it could be) to find a beautiful young girl with transparently fair complexion stood there.

(Isn't this sentence from ゆきおんな, is it? ;-) )

In addition to undrentide-san's perfect explanation, the word being modified しろい is an adjective, so the adverbial form ように is used here.

ぬけるように白い肌
ぬけるような白(白 is a noun)

(Isn't this sentence from ゆきおんな, is it? ;-) )
I think it's from つるのおんがえし.;-)

undrentide-san, Thank you so much for so perfect and so clear explanation.
くびをかしげる is really means "to wonder", now i could see it. Indeed, to open the door with ones head, is a little bit... strange.

Toritoribe-san is right, this sentence from つるのおんがえし. I never had read ゆきおんな before, thank you so much for your kind suggestion. If I could finish つるのおんがえし i will try to read ゆきおんな as my next fairy tale. Just my reading is so slow, it is like crawling from word to word, from one sentence to another.

Thank you all again.

I don't know if this matters, but I'll say it anyway: くびを かしげながら とを あけろと should be くびを かしげながら とを あけと.

Oh, yes exactly, it is my type mistake. Thank you very much !

Just glad to help (if that's indeed what I did)!
