Okay, the first most important thing for this thread is for everyone to get one thing completely straight in their heads, and that is the definition of UFO. Look at the words slowly and carefully: unidentified flying object. It is exactly that, and nothing more. It is an object, or appears to be, that is flying, or appears to be, and it is unidentified or unidentifiable, which means no one, as yet, knows what it is. Until an object is identified it is unidentified, which means a UFO could later be discovered to have simply been a hot air balloon, but was STILL a UFO for the period it was as yet unidentified. Thus, a person is not crazy to say something is a UFO, because that person is NOT saying he or she saw a craft of space aliens, if he or she understands what a UFO is.
Thus, when Gordon Cooper, test pilot and Mercury astronaut, claims to have seen UFOs, its not some crazy person taking drugs having hallucinations. Its a sane competent man telling you he has seen something he has no explanation for. And if you are sane and competent, and you see something you cannot explain, that is that. You may offer ideas as to what you saw, but if you don't know, you don't.
By way of comparison, imagine the first Europeans to come to the Americas, then go home and explain what they saw, with no clear explanations or reasons for it. It must have sounded crazy, but it wasn't. And the vice-versa even more so. Imagine the Native Americans who saw the ocean going vessels and ran back to the village telling about it. The villagers probably figured he lost his mind.
So there you go. Talk of flying saucers may or may not be crazy. But talk of UFOs definitely is not. But a great many people go with the hyped up junk definition of UFO and take it to mean an alien space craft. But that is NOT the real definition, AND it demeans all reason by taking away a word that explains the simple fact that we cannot always identify what we see.
That said, I saw a UFO last Saturday 6/22/13 at about 8:30 PM, and my wife, father-in-law and mother-in-law saw it too. We were outside finishing up a barbeque. We don't know what it was. It was just a white light, about the size of Jupiter as seen by the naked eye, traveling about south south east at a speed we could not determine for not being able to figure size or distance. But it was higher than the clouds because when it went behind one, we could not see it. Its speed though was about what you would expect from a passenger jet as seen from the ground. But there was no sound and no flashing and no other lights but the single white light. I even managed to get out my binoculars for a look before it was gone behind the clouds. All I saw was a larger round white light and that was it.
Another interesting feature to this sighting was that there was a passenger jet traveling in the opposite direction, although not on a collision course but on a parallel but opposite course to the west of the UFO. And the plane turned west and away as the two got closer, whether as a previously planned course change or to get distance from the object, I do not know.
Now, as to what it was, I can only guess. My first guess would be a military/government craft that, besides being quiet, is not really all that special. And the light is just a safety precaution and they don't use multiple flashing lights so as to not attract attention from civilian authorities. I mean, after all, all I can say is I saw a white light. No civilian authority is going to pursue that. But if I say I saw an airplane and they find there was no flight plan, that might stir up a real investigation.
Could have even been a missile or rocket, and what we saw was just the flaming tail. No explanation as why that would not make the news though.
So yeah. I saw a UFO. And it was not the first time, although the other times were not as memorable as this one, mostly because I was either a child or did not get a look for so much time. Must have seen this one for about two minutes before it was gone.
