I'm arriving in Japan on the 15th September and thought I'd check out the local weather .... it looks like there is a big freakin' hurricane/cyclone heading for Japan !!! 😲

Well........

since you were last there , they put a large glass dome over the whole main island. No more weather worries now!! NOT !!! Figured I'd bump it back up to see if any members in Japan have heard anything.

No, at least, the typhoon you're talking about.
But nobody knows the weather while you're in Japan. So check out the forcast just before you leave your country again.
 
Yeah, I saw that it's 窶佚･ﾅ耽 and 窶敕ｱﾂ湘ｭ窶堙俄?ｹﾂｭ窶堋｢ (~98-120 mph max sustained winds), which at first I thought was just the description and not the actual classification. Apparently it's the second strongest on the Japanese scale, with the strongest being 窶禿停?ｹﾂｭ (~121+); at least I think it's called 窶禿停?ｹﾂｭ. I don't remember exactly and I can't find the scale I was looking at earlier, so that may not be right. I know the 窶禿 part is right, though. :p
 
Where did you get normal measures of wind strength ? Everything I read is like this passage that really makes me wonder if the average Japanese can interpret any more than I can....:p

Thanks, Glenn ! That's extremely helpful. I had just never considered seconds as a unit before so I guess it must just be implicit, or too obvious to need explanation. 😌

I've never seen 窶禿 as part of an meteorlogical scale either, just 窶禿停?氾ｳ which I'm pretty sure isn't any kind of an official term. 😌
 
So by the 15th will it have hit ?

I can't make out the dates ... do I need to consider cancelling ?

It's a normal occurence this time of year. This one doesn't look to be particularly bad at the moment, so it shouldn't cause too much of a problem. I think it's about the same as a Category 2 or 3 using our scale. I'll have to check on that too.

Where in Japan are you planning to be ? I'm going the end of the month/early October so am in the same position. Typhoons seem to be hitting an average of every 10 days to two weeks now. Although the ones that actually make landfall usually just cause heavy rains, strong winds and in rare cases effect train schedules and the like.

I'm just hoping the heat will be a little less intense than in July when I was there last, since fall doesn't begin until November in Tokyo. 😌
 
As for the typhoon, speed is slower than expectation.
It does not yet rain in Fukuoka.

As for the children (a nephew), a typhoon looks forward to coming
It is because a school becomes a rest.

Its earthquake is also dreadful although a typhoon is dreadful.

Does anyone have a friend or relative affected by the typhoon?

I was wondering... I have been watching on internet news. Because my friend is flying today, supposedly, so my fingers are crossed that flight is according to schedule, and also that it is ok and safe. :unsure:

I thought I would post here, not in 'worries' thread... in case anyone knows someone who has been affected by the typhoon, they might be reading here.
 
At the evening of today, typhoon 14 passed by on Fukuoka.
I was able to watch center of a typhoon.
In my neighborhood, there is not the damage at all.
In Kyushu
A dead person is four people.
A missing person is 14 people
 
It'll be long long long gone. That's not to say another one won't come along though.

Wow, if this Typhoon is just a mild one, I dont really want to hang around for a large scale one!
The rain started yesterday here, nighttime there were very heavy winds, and everyone was telling me to stay home... This morning I had to venture out to my students apartment. They live on a mountain in a penthouse apartment, and an internal message came through saying that the winds were going to get worse, stay inside and tape up all the windows. Not so comforting considering that I still had to get home.
Got home half drowned, and my umbrella blown inside out, turned on the news, and saw the article about Kyuushu... doesnt look that mild to me.
Now its still raining a little, but the wind has died down considerably since dinner. Still I wouldnt cancel a trip because of the typhoon, worse case scenario would be that they wont let your plane fly into a typhoon, and you will be stranded somewhere out of danger for at least a day.
The bonus is that we have a paddling pool on the roof carpark! Now if only we could get some little fishies swimming around and a bit of sand, it could resemble a beach...
At one stage I thought the window was going to blow in and shatter all over me. Luckily it didnt. Havent heard of much damage in Korea, but then I didnt pay too much attention to the news, coz its not so easy to understand.
Have fun on your trip, and take an umbrella. I'll arrive in Japan in two days after you... if I have to take the ferry it might not be so fun... but I'll still go anyhow, even if I have to fly. Dont have much choice in the matter.
 
Didn't this typhoon drop a record amount of rain on Kyushu? I think I saw something like that in the Yahoo!Japan news section, but I didn't read the article. I'm glad nearly everyone is OK, and there wasn't much damage.
 
There was much damage of a typhoon in Kagoshima, Miyazaki, Ooita.
There was the damage of the inundation and a landslide.
In Iwakuni of Yamaguchi, Kintai-kyo Bridge seems to have been broken.

Typhoon 15 occurred in a Philippine offing.
It is expected that typhoon 15 arrives at Okinawa on about September 11.
 
EEk, and here I was thinking of going to Okinawa... all I can say is that its a beautiful day here.
