Travelling across japan.

Im a UK resident and am planning a trip to japan in the next few years.

I'm wondering is it actually possible for me t just go to japan and travel around for about a year? just arrive and pick a a place on the map and go there.

Could i actualy do that? or is that just a stupid romantic thing?

also if i can what kind of VISA would i need??

Only if your country has a tourist visa agreement with Japan allowing you to stay beyond the 90-day (or whatever the visa limit is) limit.

You can get a 90 day temporary visitor visa on arrival, if you want to stay for a year you'll have to look into getting other types. You could definitely travel around Japan for a year, staying in some places for a while, picking up the language... It's a big country, from the snow capped mountains of north Hokkaido down to the tropical islands of Okinawa .

If you're going round bit by bit then travel expenses won't be so bad, but over large distances the prices will be quite high (most people only go for a few weeks so buy the rail pass).
