Translation help, please.

I would like to know how to say "I'm sorry for the trouble, but thank you for listening" in romanji. It's fairly important for my speech-homework in my class.

~Thank you for the time.

mondai ni sumimasen keredomo, kiite arigatou gozaimasu.

I'm no expert, but if you're trying to very politely thank some one, that's one way of doing it. For a friend, something like "Mondai ni suman kedo, kiite arigatou" might be fine. Some one double check me, though.

Um, 問題 (mondai) does not not mean trouble in this way. Think 迷惑... (meiwaku)

Also, に does not link something you are sorry for to the apology. て or just a pause can do that.

Also, すみませんけれども does not really work here. Nor does すまんけど. The reason is that what follows is not a request/admission of guilt, etc.


LilKitten: Why are you saying you are sorry? Probably not necessary/only weakens your speech.

A simple: 'yorshiku onegaishimasu' at the end would probably be sufficient. If you want to say thanks for listening, say something like:

kiitekurete arigatou gozaimasu. yoroshiku onegai shimasu.
or
kiitekudasatte arigatou gozaimashita. yoroshiku onegai itashimasu.

Is this thanking the audience for sitting through your presentation ? If yes, there is a set way of finishing off speeches in Japan.


The phrase for that occasion is this : "(Saigo ni), goseichou (itadaki), arigatou gozaimashita," or "Thank you for carefully listening to me."

Another line before that could be : Ijou desu/Ijou de owarimasu. (That is all. Thank you for listening).



Just don't add "yoroshiku onegai shimasu(itashimasu)" without implying a reqest in advance.


If this is part of the homework that will be judged as personal effort, please play fair and make an attempt yourself next time before asking.

If the apology is over something that was said but she is thanking the person for hearing her out anyway....maybe これは問題になるかもしれません。 すみません。。。(just as an example).


問題 is translated here as "problem," meaning an issue which requires effort to solve, something that becomes a source of concern, worry, etc.

If the "trouble" is nothing more than a slight inconvenience or pain to the listener use 迷惑、面倒、わざわざ。。。など When the English is slightly unnatural and it isn't clear which situation applies, like here, safest thing is to leave the expression out entirely.
