He is one of the main actors in five of Kurosawas best films: Shichinin no samurai (Seven Samurai), Rashomon (In the Woods), Yojimbo (The Bodyguard), Tengoku to jigoku (High and Low) and Kumonosu jo (Throne of Blood). He is great.

As it happens, I have seen only two of the many movies Mifune made with directors other than Kurosawa, and one of those, Midway, seemed like a waste of many good actors. My favorite Mifune movie (of the ones I've seen) is Seven Samurai, followed closely by Heaven & Hell and Throne of Blood. Unfortunately, I have not yet seen Rashomon.

I read that Mifune was the first choice to play 'Tiger Tanaka', the head of the Japanese secret service in the early James Bond film You Only Live Twice. But I think he'd already promised to work on another film, so the role was passed to the late Tetsuro Tamba instead (who was excellent).

Wow I never heard of that movie before, I'll have to look it up next time I'm in Brazil (they don't have Japanese movies here in Portugal and when they do it's usually dubbed, and very poorly I might add ).
My favorite movie with Toshiro Mifune is Shichinin no Samurai with Tsubaki Sanjuro a close second.
