I know である but If you were to say： "Stop being so stubborn."

Would it be: "がんこしないで"？

Perhaps they might say "いいがけんにしろ" cut it out!

Never heard of がんこしないで
 
そんなにかたくなにならないで is an alternative expression.

I'd say そんなに意地をはらないで is gentler, more feminine. Plus, "sonnani" suggests a "limit" to being stubborn.

意地を張るなよ is certainly masculine and can suggest a bit of anger, though depending on circumstance. It can also suggest negation, not allowing even a bit of obstinacy (also depending on context).

In the case these others didn't quite fit the bill, I thought of a couple more.

そんなに意地を張るのはやめなさい（よ） can be used on a child or 年下

そんなに意地を張るのはやめて when you're trying to reason with a friend

It depends on tone of voice, too. If said among male friends, I think it would be perfectly fine.

そうですね。「意地を張るなよ」は言い方によって怒っ ているように聞こえるでしょう。 「意地を張らないで」は優しい感じだけど、:)

Hi undrentide san, how exactly can you break this phrase (そんなにかたくなにならないで) up? I see that I get lots of results on google with this quote. Would this be a common kimarimonku?

Seeing other posts, now I think 意地を張らないで is so much better but anyway...

頑（な）／かたくな is similar to 頑固 (stubborn).
It's na-adjective, also often used as adjective （かたくなに）
 
How about

そんなに意固地になるなよ。
そんなに意固地にならないでよ。
そんなに意固地にならなくたっていいじゃない！

Ah, the な is part of the stem. Heh, I was confused there for a second. 😅😅
 
thanks. I was also confused about the 'na' part. I have not seen this word before until you brought it up.

etc.

As for the stem part of かたくな, online dictionary suggests 頑
while IME shows only 頑な (with okurigana)
 
So which is more common to use. かたくな or 頑固 or 意地

As adjective, 頑固な is often used.
To be (or act) stubborn 意地を張る is maybe most commonly used.
To describe a person who is stubborn, 意地っ張り is used.
But you may want to hear what others think/feel too... :)
 
To me, 意地を張る is used in the broadest range of meaning from being stubborn in a certain situation (such as refusing to go out in the snow or not wanting to drink something) to stubbornness as a personality trait.

頑固 can also be used broadly, I think.

I generally interpret かたくな as stubbornness in refusing to bend your principles or belief, even when you realize you're not exactly right.

英語の Don't be so arrogant, irrational, self-justifying AND pigheaded みたいなもので、 :p

Arrogance would be related to when a person is correct and they like to boast about it. Atleast that how I would use it.

"Just because he has money doesn't mean he shoul dbe so arrogant."
or
"Ok, ok, ok already, you were right, no need to be arrogant about it"

I don't think arrogant people are necessarily, or even usually, correct but I'm still thinking of a good Japanese way to express it. 😅

Anyway, asked a friend about some other persistent expressions 頑強、強情、
ﾋ?ｪ窶廾ﾂ、ﾅｽﾂｷﾂ拗ﾂ and here is a bit of her explanation. I'll try to post a follow up if no one else gets there first.

頑強という表現は普段使うことはあまりないです。強情 は意地を張るような人を指していう性格です。執拗は、 意味が違ってしつこいとか、あきらめないなどの意味合 いが強いです。（ネガティブな意味で）一徹は何かを貫 き通すことで、また意地を張るとは意味が違います。
「かたくなになる」と「意地をじはる」は意味が似てい ますが時と場合によって自然に使い分けます。
