the meaning of the surname ye?

it's me again.i know ye means page,leaf in chinese but does it mean the same thing as a surname?

I don't think surnames carry any meaning at all. It's just the character, and if it did have a meaning, it would be that.

Pretty clearly, "Son of John" -- someone with that surname in the dark annals of history had a dad named John.

Not a good example.

I'm aware of that >.>
But no one thinks "Oh, his surname is Johnson, so one of his ancestor on his father's side was named John" when they hear the surname. At least, most people don't.
If you must assign a meaning to surnames, then ye ﾅ?ﾂ?窶杯 does indeed have the same meaning of "leaf" as a surname.
I can't think of any characters that changed in meaning when used as a last name. Except maybe some of those double-character last names?

叶， also means the leaf, 叶子，树叶。
do you know a kungfu movie 《叶问》？
叶问， a chinese name, 叶 is his surname, 问 is his given name.
O(∩_∩)O~，like my surname bo, it is a surname, but also means "thin'' "infertile""indifferent" and so on.
