The general development
Cheongsam is one of women's apparel. It was come from the traditional women costumes of Manchu which is one of China's minorities. And it was improved by the women of Han ethnic of the Republic of China in the first half of the 20th century.
Moreover, cheongsam was regarded as one of China's national formal dress by the Republic of China government in 1929.After the Republic of China, the female of Shanghai, Peking and other places made some improvements for it on the basis of cheongsam on.
However, after 1949, the cheongsam was gradually neglected and become unpopular in the mainland, especially during the Cultural Revolution; the cheongsam was considered a symbol of feudalism, capitalism that a lot of cheongsams were damaged.
The traditional cheongsam of China
Cheongsam was the traditional clothing of Manchu in the in the first half of the 20th century in China. It was a symbol of fashion due to its design was combined the Chinese traditional clothing style and western country's element.
While in the feudal society in that time, it is impossible for women to show the curves of their figure, so the traditional cheongsam was made into no curves but just a straight line from the collar to the pleat. Although the cheongsam gown was come from Manchu, it is not the flag clothing. Cheongsam gown is the dress with Chinese characteristics, and it was the fashionable dress which was made by western style and reflecting the Western aesthetic in that time.
In addition, cheongsam was made into colorful and complicated style, but yellow and golden were the two forbidden colors for the common people due to these two colors were the symbols of the Royal Family. Since the cheongsam was a plane fitted dress, Pangun was became the only fabric design room, so that, the more the Pangun were the more beautiful the cheongsam was.
In the late Qing Dynasty, "Eighteen set"(i.e.: inserts eighteen laces to the cheongsam) had been being the fashionable technique. The popular cheongsam designs of Qing Dynasty were multi-sketch gimmick. Birds crane Phoenix, bamboo and chrysanthemum flowers, and the Eight Immortals, Gods are all common themes.
