Apple's iPods add games support!
Yes, you can now play mobile phone-style games on the just-announced fifth generation of iPods
A new generation of Apple iPods has been unveiled -- and you can play videogames on them.
As if the iPod didn't already have a big enough range of abilities, the fifth-generation iPod --when combined with iTunes 7, the latest iteration of the iPod software -- can run games.
iPod owners will be able to buy games from iTunes for £3.99: the initial library includes Pac-Man, Tetris, Bejewelled, Texas Hold-Em, Mahjong, Mini-Golf, Vortex and Zuma. Unsurprisingly, iPod games are pretty much ports from mobile phones, with titles from EA, Namco and PopCap so far to the fore.
In order to run games, it seems that you will need one of the new fifth-generation iPods -- and a full-blown iPod at that; the games will not run on iPod Nanos or Shuffles. Apple hasn't done anything radical to the new iPods beyond giving them a makeover: they have improved battery life (14 hours playback for the 30Gb version and 20 hours for the 60Gb version), thinner cases, brighter screens and more competitive prices: the 30Gb version costs £189 and the 60Gb version £259.
And the enormous popularity of iPods means that the games catalogue on iTunes is bound to expand very rapidly, particularly once Apple begins to strike deals with mobile phone game publishers. As ever, we'll keep you abreast of significant developments.
