I've been playing drums for awhile & I'm looking to add a piece of percussion to the set-specifically the taiko. Just looking for some general info-price, tuning, care etc.Thanks.

Hi nhannah,
I just noticed that no one has gotten back to you on the subject of taiko.

Most of the larger taiko drums you see have fixed heads, the heads are stretched over the body and then nailed on. Once the head is attached, it is pretty hard to alter the pitch, although it can be altered slightly with heat. Over time, with use, the pitch of the drum will lower as the head is stretched.

Shime daiko and Okedo daiko have drum heads that are held in place by rope. The pitch of these drums can be altered by adjusting the tension of the ropes.

Taiko made in Japan are usually made from a solid piece of wood. This makes them very expensive. Many North American groups make their own drum bodies from old wine barrels.

Mark Miyoshi in CA is probably has some of the best quality drums made here in the states: http://www.miyoshidaiko.com/

Asano Daiko and Miyamoto taiko are probably the largest and well-known Japanese taiko makers but there are many smaller ones throughout the country.

Here is a good resource for North American Taiko: San Jose Taiko In the resources section is links to other taiko groups and resources.

Hope this helps,
Taira
