Street Racing in Japan!

Hello, When i possibly get over there, me being a person of tuning cars and have love of japanese made cars, wondered if anyone been part of or witnessed ever street racing in japan and/or if they ever seen any meetings with just car ethusiast into racing or just tuning theirs cars for club meets. I think it would be awesome for me to try and find a fellow Honda tuning club of some sort when i possibly get if over there, its another reason why i want to be there ASAP!

I personally have never witnessed streetracing here in Japan, and thank goodness! It's very dangerous (unless you mean some kind of organized event).

I'm sure that if you looked hard enough, though, you could find it....but I can't help but wonder why anyone would want to travel half a world away to find something he can find at home.....

well i think its much more organized over in japan in my opinion, and also i mean not illegaly racing lol and the fact that the cars are superb over there,and also japan has either the top or best tuning equipment and shops for a car to get, this is also why i want to move there, good stuff!

On some parts of the expressways there is apparently "racing" or idiots-driving-at-dangerous-speeds. That's the closest I've heard to anything.

I know in Okinawa, there is a club that the military made, so Tuners/Drivers that do it for a hobby can have a place to legally do it at the Nago Circuit.
I've been to one drift race to watch, and it was great watching armatures drift.

Just because people have money, and there are some good tuners, does not make an underground racing league leap into existence.

It's not underground, Okinawa government apporoved of this to keep the street racers off the main roads.

Good luck, Not many people are really into Street racing from my understanding. And the one that are do not brag about it. I am into cars also and after three trips I still have yet to witness anything. I did go to a circuit event a few times but that was about it. Many "hashiriya" are quiet about what they do and unless you already know someone on the "in" Then it will be hard I think to learn about locations.

The dress-up scene it is pretty popular over here (at least when I was still living in Nagoya). I used to hang out with some regulars who were part of a Mitsubishi club that would meet regularly in Okazaki, even got my picture in "D-Car" car magazine lol (gotta love the Gaijin factor). But like Damicci said, the real after-market guys who use their cars for more than show don't really go out of their way to make it known...

Mike Cash has a point, if your big on street racing its probably more wide spread and common at home then in Japan.

And no, Tokyo Drift isnt reality. At all.

please excuse me Mike if i have offended you in anyway,sorry.But im a car fan (particularly of the japanese brands) and plan on mainly taking street cars and putting the test on the race tracks their, of course their will be times where it is partially illegal, but racing is so big over their it seems as if its legal in times, closing off roads, drifting in parking lots, drifting in the hills,etc. (also the Kanjo circuit ive heard about where teams actually race dangerously on these roads, flying through traffic-trust me not me). I attend to race responsibly and of course driving at high speeds is dangerous it self, practice makes perfect.

and nurizeko, in the USA it is strict and lame at the same time, with my closest track, luckily being at least 45 mins away.

I'm sure there are a lot of car shows, but I personally don't think I've ever heard of any kind of car racing in Japan. Horse races, boat races, go-cart races, yes. But car races...I'm sure they exist, but my impression is that country-wide car racing is not very big.

Keep in mind that I live in the same area as Toyota automotive's main offices, with factories just about everywhere!

I still call BS on the street racing. Circuit racing exists, but you require a special licence (and have to sit an exam like a normal driving licence), your car is inspected and has to meet certain safety standards, you have to have the right equipment, and then adhere to circuit rules. This isn't even hinting on illegal and many people do this with their cars and bikes as a hobby.

As for "but racing is so big over their it seems as if its legal in times, closing off roads, drifting in parking lots, drifting in the hills,etc", I had a google search and can't find any offical on-road rallies or races (in my own town we have the Adelaide Classic Rally, Adelaide Rally, the V8 Supercars in the city itself and used to host the F1 on actual normal city roads), parking lots are closed, locked and guarded so are not viable for anything never mind drifting, and people who race on mountain roads get their cars impounded.

Closed circuit racing is the norm, I'd stop watching Initial D because that died out years ago.

In a country where the most dangerous thing is risking taking a bite of foreign food, or shaming yourself infront of your fellow japanese, large scale widespread ILLEGAL street racing seems a distant fantastical prospect.

My bet is whatever you find in Japan, it will by the book, nothing like the movies.

You just described half of tokyo drift. Besides, if you want to track race, and the farthest track is 45 mins away, why would you fly across the world to do it? Theres tracks all over the US, 45 mins seems alot better than 20 hours on a plane. Not to mention you will not be bringing your own car there, I don't know how you plan on doing everything you want to with someone elses car. Unless you have a VERY close friend in japan with good connections. You are talking about a nearly un-obtainable dream thats just plain ridiculous. Sorry to bust your bubble but nothing you say makes any sense. plus if you wanna race "in the hills" (just like tokyo drift) and risk prosicution (SP?) why risk in where you aren't even a citizen? Besides you are in FL. I'm from tampa... go to tampa, orlando, or miami! the street tuner scene is HUUUUGGGEEE in all those cities.

lol no no wiggly, i will be attending a unviersity(attaining my visas) of some sort over their and hopefully be able to just watch or even take place(if i some how get the money) in races which seem the most safe-basically the track. Please excuse my ignorance if i have no clue about the racing, but i do remeber it being a Underground subject. Perhaps people who only live in certain areas will only see it, but im ignorant in the situation with not enough sources (lol no not just from tokyo drift-lame movie, only good part was it was in japan).

P.S. i have no intentions of ruining such a fascinating country i wish to live in, why would one?

I still love how its this big underground thing. Where I live we have some excellent roads going through the mountains only 20minutes from the CBD center. Its not unusual to have idiots racing on these roads, but its not organised in any fashion, its spur of the moment "hey I'll race ya to Strath" moments.

BTW, nice video Goes back to what I said in post #4, there are people who abuse the expressway system (which does have some sections that can be used as a circuit and not having to pass through tollbooths meaning you can go around and around unobstructed), but camera systems help with this in recent times, and its not racing, its idiots driving fast.

Edit: ahh, that video is pretty funny, apart from driving dangerously their cars are not all that fast - the guy can't even catch up to the cop car
