That was put in place some time ago to ward off spammers if I remember correctly. The same goes for the two minute rule between posts. Since those rules have been instituted, I must say that the level of spam has gone down remarkably.

It is annoying to not be able to post links, but there are workarounds to it, and you could always ask a moderator to put it in for you.

Er, no. It is there to prevent spammers and it will remain. I kow sites where you have to wait for 100 posts before being able to post URLs.
