The Kanto region saw its first snow yesterday, and snow is accumulating tonight. Mind that a few centimetres of snow in the Greater Tokyo area usually results in a major breakdown of public transportation.

The Japan Meteorological Agency is warning people around central Japan, including Tokyo's 23 wards, about accumulated snow that could disrupt transportation, damage infrastructure and make road surfaces slippery. Heavy snow is expected across the Kanto region and the prefectures of Yamanashi, Nagano, and Shizuoka from the evening of March 4 through the following morning. Mountainous areas will be hit particularly hard, the agency said. This is due to a combination of a cold air mass over the region and a low-pressure system moving along the southern coast of the main island of Honshu. Maximum snow accumulations expected in the 24 hours to 6 a.m. on March 5 are 30 centimetres in Yamanashi and Nagano prefectures, as well as in the mountainous areas of northern Kanto; 20 cm in the Hakone, Tama and Chichibu areas and 3 cm in the 23 wards of the capital.
