Smoking in Japan

I understand that there really is no such thing as a "non smoking area" in Japan, but I would like to know, where exactly are some places you absolutely cannot smoke at?

also, are there any "rules" to smoking in Japan? When I had a foreign exchange student come and we had a smoke, he would always ask me where to put the butt. Is it not ok to just toss the butt on the street in Japan?

Smoking is allowed in more places in Japan than in most parts of America, but there are still plenty of places where you can't smoke in Japan. Even train stations have designated smoking areas - you can't just smoke anywhere in the station. As for the butts, it's just more courteous to put them in the bins.

lol is that really a big suprise? There are already a lot of customs for bath houses, not being able to smoke in one doesnt seem very suprising. As for church... who smokes in a church XD :smoke:

I have a weird feeling Smoke probably attends a church you can smoke in....lmao

there are plenty of non smoking place sin japan. probably just as much as in the US.

Since the churchgoing population of Japan is damned near zero percent of the population, the latter rarely comes up.

I want to an okonomiyaki place in Osaka last night where you are not allowed to smoke while anyone in the restaraunt is still eating. After everyone is done and drinking it's okay though. It's a small restaraunt, only about 10 seats.
