Simple sentences translation question...

I've just begun to read very basic Japanese books, which for me is great. However, I occasionally run into sentences that I can't quite figure out the meaning of, though they seem very simple. For example, here's a passage from a book called "女の子" (my attempts at translation are next to the lines):
1. 人形もあります。 "There are also dolls."
2. でも、一つだけありません。 "But there is not only one."
3. それは、「言葉」。 "That one is 'word'."
4. 女の子は「言葉」を言いません。 "The little girl does not say 'word.'"
5. そして、笑いません。 "And she doesn't smile."
It's probably obvious that I don't understand sentences 3 and 4. I think it suggests that she doesn't say a word, or is silent. Is that somewhat correct?

I think you got them right basically. I'm adding my own translation to make the whole story makes sense as

1. 人形もあります。 "There are also dolls."
There are dolls, too.

2. でも、一つだけありません。 "But there is not only one."
But there's one thing that is missing.

3. それは、「言葉」。 "That one is 'word'."
That's "words".

4. 女の子は「言葉」を言いません。 "The little girl does not say 'word.'"
The girl does not say words.

5. そして、笑いません。 "And she doesn't smile."

どもありぎなとうございます！

I think it is just typo, but correct way to say "thank you very much" is

(And when asking something, one usually says
よろしくおねがいします。
and say "thank you" afterwards.

Your good translation made me examine my own not so good translation again, and I think I now understand the second line:
でも、一つだけありません。 Which, if I break it down, says roughly, "But, one thing only there is not." Which makes more sense in English as "There is only one thing missing." That makes sense. I appreciate your help!

Reading this suprised me.

1. Because I unserstood the sentences before reading your transaltions

2. I'm not the only one who read baby Japanese books.

It makes me want to go back to my library and pay off my fine and get some more baby books to see if I could understand them now! (you see, I got baby books in Japanese from the library about a year ago, and I couldnt understand anything they sais... heh Maybe now I can...?)

どういたしまして。

Concerning ひとつだけありません, to be more word-to-word, translation would be:
"Only one thing does not exist" which does not sound natural as English, which I converted to "there's one thing that is missing".

It wasn't a bad translation at all, it just wasn't correct in this situation.
