School Shoes

I'll be going to Japan as a high school exchange student soon. I received some information from my school and I was told to bring slippers from home. I assume that means they're not part of the uniform and that I get to pick them. If that's the case, what sort of slippers do high school students typically wear? Girls in specific.

I was also asked to bring gym shoes. Are there any rules regarding this? My school in the US for example requires our shoes to have laces and to be white. Do they typically have any color specifications or anything of the sort?

I see most girls wearing black lace-less dress shoes,... but that might be for outside... if anything the school should have a pair you can use for a while, just see what everyone else is wearing and then go buy some once you are here.
