Hey what's up just being curious...
Are there any samurai clans left in Japan or peopple only practice KENDO?

Are you seriously asking if there are still guys walking around in kimono with swords?

That's sort of like asking if there are still any knights in England clanking about the countryside in suits of armor. Or if the gentlemen in Boston are still fond of powdered wigs, knee breeches, and three-cornered hats for daily wear.
 
Thats a pretty dumb thing to ask (no offense). No samurai don't exist anymore. In terms of 'clans' then sure there would be decendants, but I highly doubt alot of them carry on sword fighting, their probably just normal people with normal jobs.
 
i don't think its that dumb to ask...

after all Japan still has ninja's!!!

and i dont think the poster was really refering to kimono clad samurais but more people that apply the way of the samurai to thier lives...

uhm...yes they do.....

they call them selves secret police and carry guns.....still ninja.....for what is a ninja?

a spy / assasin

ninja has no honour and uses the latest technology to perform his kill, and does so from as far away as possible witrh as little noise...

modernday ninja weapon of choice...silenced sniper...

weather they run around in masks and funny toe shoes i doubt.....but that they exists is known...

also traditional ninja's still exists in that ninja village

Ninja were nothing more than special ops troops. Samurai takes off armour, puts on mufti, goes to do a job, comes back, puts armour back on. Look at Hattori Hanzo, for Christ's sake. He was one of Ieyasu's GENERALS.

For those of you who thought I was asking about the kimono guys, well...
come on yo get real. How ever I do thank every single one of you who posted a reply, it let me know who trusts guns and who doesn't...
and who just lives to insult peopple.
As for you AJBryant I see that you have some knowlege on samurais do you study the or is just part of your history studies...
I don't know much about individual samurais,but I'll tell you that my favorite samurai is Miyamoto Musashi.
 
I'm not sure what you mean by the question. If you study Japanese history, you have to study the samurai -- and if you're studying the samurai, you're studying Japanese history.

If you want to get "right" reply/answer/information to your question, I'd suggest you to give your definition of "samurai" (or bushi) i.e. what kind of people you're wondering still exist today in Japan.

What does trusting guns have to do with anything?
 
hmmmm alrighty then....

lets look at what wikipedia say regarding the ninja:

now that right there could straight up be the 'Mission Statement' of any intelligence service worth its name in the world.

out of curiosity does any one know what the Japanese Secret Service is called?
i knew one guy who was in it but then it was simply reffered to as 'secret police'.

as for the way of the samurai.... that whole honour code thing still applies to many people/organisations in Japan....

it depends in what way you mean samurai...

as for trusting guns....a gun is a Tool...that sounds very NRA, and i don't condone civilian gun ownership...but its a damn side more nifty than a pointy stick when it comes to dispatching 'justice'

If your going to kill someone...knife or gun,...just as deadly

i'm a good shot, and a canny hand with eppe, and foil (can do sabre but it always digresses into hacking and slashing so there is more skill with the former two)

so i know both....and know its not as easy as they make it look in the films!

both require a simmilar skill set.
a keen eye, good reactions, balance and timing.
obviosly with swordplay reactions are more important than with guns,
and with guns a keen eye is more important...

however if one were to be completely objective....a gun is infintly more lethal than a sword provided the distance between you and your target is more than 12 feet, in which case a sword is better.

as you are probably aware samurai lived with a high code of honour...yet as a ninja you could do things a samurai could not..i.e stab people in the back, or while sleeping.

also its worth remembering that when samurai commited sepuku (the i kill myself thing) they usually had there head chopped off by an executioner immidiatly after stabbing themselves...

Well most western eu countries have Knightly orders and they dont walk around in armour. So why could there not be Samurai clans in the same way? I guess its a question from us who dont know of similar or dissimilar the concept of knight and samurai are. A japanese friend told me that there were so many samurais that being decendant from one means nothing. Here there where very few knights so having one in the family tree is kinda cool and usually shows in the name.

One day, you were samurai. The next day, BY LAW, you were not, and there were no more samurai.

Why do some Westerners romanticize the samurai so much?

Although it hasn't been mentioned in this particular thread, over the years I have in various places on the net encountered people with such views who like to say things like, "If I were a samurai I would have been a ronin. They were the coolest because they were masterless samurai." Not realizing, in their ignorance, that for a samurai being "masterless" really meant nothing more than being "unemployed".

Ah you see these are the things that are fun to know, I had no idea it was like that. I think most people know very little of the actual historical background.

Why yes. Go to Japan and if you see anyone wearing traditional kimono's just go ask them if they are samurai (samurai is the plural of samurai btw.) However, make sure to bow all the way to the ground on your hands and knees or they will decapitate you. It won't hurt though because the swords are kept very sharp. It is common to see full grown men walking through the streets in Japan armed to the teeth with swords ready to kill anyone at the slightest whim. Full hundred person battles between the prefectures still take place today and often the streets of Shibuya will be drenched at least one week in the month.

There are certain days that Samurai are much easier to find and walk around on the street. Days like "coming of age" day for example. However, because not to get between any clan warfare between waring clans. If you are very lucky you'll see a few do a jumping attack. Yes, they CAN jump as high as you see in movies and anime. Approximately, 25 feet is the highest recorded, but still pretty high.
