Yes, they are amazing. It depends on what part of Tokyo you're in. Golden Week-ish is usually when they start in Tokyo. End of April, beginning of May.
Start of cherry blossom season is to be announced by Japan Meteorological Agency either today (March 31) or tomorrow (April 1) here in Tokyo.
The blossoms will be in bloom for 7 to 10 or so days, depending on the temperature (the warmer, the sooner the flowers will be gone). This is for the "Somei Yoshino" blossoms, the most popular and the de facto "standard" cherry blossom variety in Japan.
The larger, double-petaled variety (yae-zakura) will blossom a couple of weeks later.
