I think this is the most interesting person in Japanese History. He was committed to destroying the bakufu system but he aimed to do it politically when everyone else was trying to do it violently. He worked with people within the bakufu (Katsu Kaishu ) as well as enemies of it (Saigo Takamori , Kido Takayoshi , Takasugi Shinsaku).
He also understood the importance of having a strong navy and constantly worked to develop Japan's naval power even though it was on the verge of civil war.
Unfortunately he was assassinated before the Bakufu was overthrown. However, his ideas served as the blueprint for the Meiji government.
Do you guys know anything about him? He's got to be one of the most colorful characters in all of Japanese History.
