Safety of older mansion apartments

Hi all

I'm looking at apartments in Toyko ahead of a move next spring to get an idea of the market. My budget is around 18万 and looking around Ebisu as want to be walkable to work.

My question is - how safe are older mansion blocks in case of a serious quake? Is there a cut off point in terms of antiquity, say, where new building safety standards were introduced?

I ask, as of course, the older blocks are far cheaper and some have been renovated quite nicely.

Not to sound like a smart-aleck or be unwelcoming, but googling "Japan earthquake building law" yields far more info than any of us here are going to be able to pull from between our ears.

Yes - anything post 1981 should be ok, provided the builder didn't cut corners (as happens from time to time).
