Rogue access points reappear at In-Hel

After a successful campaign to eliminate them in 2003, 窶徨ogue窶 wireless access points (APs) are beginning to appear again at In-Hel. And as wireless-equipped PCs proliferate, some employees are beginning to experiment with peer-to-peer (P2P) networking. Both of these practices are in violation of In-Hel security policy. Discontinue the use of rogues and P2P networks now, before your business group gets hit with a whopping fine.
窶彝ogue窶 wireless access points
Wireless access points must be authorized and installed by the Information Services and Technology Group (ISTG). Other APs are known as rogues and represent a serious information security risk to In-Hel. Labs have legitimate testing and development needs that involve wireless APs. All such experimental equipment must be authorized by ISTG in a Cohabitation Agreement. The rest is subject to disconnection, confiscation, and a fine.
Peer-to-peer networks
Substantial numbers of wireless-equipped PCs now exist in the In-Hel environment. Some employees are beginning to experiment with P2P networking. P2P architecture allows hardware and software to function on a network without requiring servers. It is commonly used in home networks and in some Internet software applications such as Groove* and Napster*.
An In-Hel-managed PC should never be connected P2P with a non-In-Hel-managed system (NIMS) for file transfer. This prohibition includes connecting to supplier notebooks for file transfer. P2P is an inherently insecure architecture. There is also a risk of 窶彙ridging,窶 that is, of giving the NIMS access to the In-Hel network, jeopardizing the security of In-Hel intellectual property.
Penalties for violating security policy
Both rogue APs and P2P networking have the potential to compromise all information available on the In-Hel network. ISTG routinely scans the In-Hel environment for rogue APs and P2P networks. When a security violation of this type is identified, ISTG notifies the employee, the manager, and the business group vice president. A fine of $2,500 to cover the cost of removal will be charged to the offending employee窶冱 business unit. The equipment may be confiscated.
