Rice cooker - opinion

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to ask if anyone has this rice cooker or any opinion about it.. I was thinking about buying it, but it would be nice to hear from someone who's used it before.

Also, what are the main differences between using the rice cooker and cooking the rice on the stove? I usually do my sushi rice on the stove and it's a fairly simple recipe: rinse the rice until the water runs clear, have the rice on high heat until it starts to boil, put it on low heat for 10 minutes and then turn the heaf off and leave it for 10 more minutes. After that, add the vinegar.

I'm starting to think if going for a rice cooker is the best option

if you type in the search area up at the top in the red bar "rice cooker" , you will see several old JREF posts about rice cookers. Hopefully reading those old posts will help you.

That looks huge! Do you have a reason to cook that much rice?
I would recommend a small cheaper model with a timer as the only real perk if you are just one person.

Thanks, I thought about that too and that was one of the reasons I was asking for opinions. I sometimes cook for as much as 7-8 persons, but usually it's for 2 What do you think about the younger brother of that one:

It has a 5-cup capacity.

By the way, one question I have about these rice cookers: I read somewhere that they usually stop the cooking automatically, but I don't see a timer there. How does it work? Do I have to keep track of the time or will the rice cooker stop automatically when it's done? Also, when I cook sushi rice I have it first on high heat and when it starts to boil reduce to low heat... will the rice cooker take care of that?

For some reason that link doesn't seem to work with tapatalk but most rice cookers take care of the time and heat levels by themselves. We have a Zojirushi Nero Fuzzy that has multiple settings and has always cooked the rice perfectly. It cost about $175 four years ago. Well worth it in my opinion.

Does anybody else miss the old-style electric cookers with the clattering lid? Maybe these new electronically controlled marvels with the bells and whistles do a better job cooking and keeping the rice warm, but I wish we could have kept the clattering lid.

We have the NS-ZCC10 (5.5 cups / 1 liter) model. We have a family of three, but even with friends over we only have needed to make 3 cups. I would guess that the 5 cup version you linked to above would be quite sufficient.
