Anyways, so say the lady's like "what would you like?" and my dad will be like "Ohh, hne's learning Japanese and he wants to order in Japanese, can he?" then she'd either not understand what he's saying, or say "oh ok" lol xD

So, like sayyy I wanted to get yaki udon that day. I'd say something like.

"toriniku iri yaki udon o onegai shimasu. miso shiru o sarada no kawari ni moraemasu ka?"

andd if i want bento with those two things (there are other choices , so ill just put "naninani" in the place, since im guessing that means blahblah or such and such for what Elizabeth saidd:

"naninani to naninani no obentou o onegai shimasu. miso shiru o sarada no kawari ni moraemasu ka?"

Or something liek that??

Hountou ?? Ooops, maybe I misunderstood then. I thought teriyaku with sushi was the KIND of obentou you wanted (I just hadn't heard of that one yet). But separately ?? Watch out, don't get carried away just for practice or this is going to be a super sized dinner. Can you try listing them all yourself first ?


And btw, what I said earlier was OK, except for one part. I forgot the "no" after niwatori (toriniku)...but anyway that is kind of not a very good or maybe slightly awkward way. Like toritoribe suggested, see if they don't understand 照り焼きチキン better to begin with. Finally don't lose your nerve, the Chinese translation is 鶏串 if all else gets a blank stare...

I had a time like that before, i went to a "japanese" resturant......so i actually started speaking japanese to the waitress...and guess what....she wasnt japanese, she was chinese, so she didnt understand anything i said. Thats what i hate about these wanna-be japanese resturants.....they looking japanese, but they arent

Well, like. At this one place I go, (which btw is, in fact, a japanese-chinese resaturant, and i thinka ll the people there are chinese) they have different types of bentos. Like, there's "chicken teriyaki bento", "shrimp something bento" etc. But, at the japanese-only restaurant i like more (which im pretty sure the people are japanese. i didnt htink they looked chinese and im pretty sure i heard them speaking japanese, or atleast it didnt sound like chinese xD) has the bento, but there about maybe 10 choices to go WITH the bento, or in it, i guess. For example, it automatically comes with like miso soup, green salad, rice, these 2 fish ball thingys, raddish and an orange, and then a choice of 2 things off the choice thingys to go with it. Usually I'd get the sushi and the chicken teriyaki. All i know is that theres sushi, chicken teriyaki, i think shirmp or shrimp something, and yakitori. But there's more choices, i just cant remember. ive only been there once

But, since it sounds a bit awkward, and since it's this situation, what shoud i say?

The meaning is the same; obentou is just bikago, a dressed up version of bentou to make it sound nicer. I'd say it's unnecessary.

I'd go with teriyaki chikin. Toriniku no teriyaki sounds like you're trying too hard to use the Japanese word when there's an acceptable and widespread alternative.

Again, you would be better off not trying to equate particles with English words.

because the verb you are using, onegaishimasu (negau) or kudasai (kureru) are direct-object verbs; the items you request are the direct objects, and call for the 'wo' particle.

I've never heard anyone refer to them as otemoto, but it's commonly written on the paper and does mean chopsticks. Specifically, the wooden chopsticks that you split apart to use are called "waribashi."

"XXX de onegaishimasu" could be "by" or "in" or "with" or nothing that makes sense in translation...
I would ask for chopsticks after everyone is done ordering or it may give the impression you want them in the food. (Ohashi wo kudasai).
Also to order for yourself only : Watashi ni wa....
For the entire group : Minna ni...

Don't sweat it if you forget the "o" or something trivial like that, especially with "onegaishimasu" it is actually left out a lot. And it's terrible, but so many native speakers don't even add お願いします or ください even though the wait staff has to speak very politely to them -- lots of なさいますか？ございません。 etc.

お客が、ウェイターに、「お箸はありますか？」などはよくつかわれると思います。。。


とにかく、よく、「おてもと」は、高級なレストランなどで働いているウェイターが使いそうな言葉ですね。


外人が「です・ます」型で話せれば、文句はない くらいだと思いますけれども。。。

実は僕も知らなくて調べました。
なんで「おてもと」って言うんだろうなんて、ここで聞 かれるまで考えたこともなかったですから。
取り箸がない場合、お年寄りとかはよく自分の箸の反対 側(口をつけていないほう、 割り箸の元々くっついていた側) で取り分けたりしますね。自分が口をつけた箸で、他の 人も食べる料理を触らないというマナーなんでしょうね。

お店では普通に「お箸下さい」のほうが自然ですね。

アメリカで、自分のテーブルには、コップかフォークかナプキンなどがいくつかなかった場合は、

注文の後。。。ウェイターに。。。それから、何々をいただけますか、それから、何々を持ってきてくださいますか？
それから、何々何も。ここには何々何がないようだから。 というように頼むのが自然ですね。
