Remembering Daniel Inouye

Not sure which subforum to post this in, but Japanese-American U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye (Hawaii) died recently, while I was on vacation. He was 88.

I don't see a thread on him here, so here's a start:

Inouye was at the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941 as a medical volunteer.

On April 21, 1945, Inouye was grievously wounded while leading an assault on a heavily-defended ridge near San Terenzo in Tuscany, Italy.

A very remarkable statement from him:

Inouye was also involved in the Iran-Contra investigations of the 1980s, chairing a special committee from 1987 until 1989. During the hearings Inouye referred to the operations that had been revealed as a "secret government" saying:

"[There exists] a shadowy Government with its own Air Force, its own Navy, its own fundraising mechanism, and the ability to pursue its own ideas of the national interest, free from all checks and balances, and free from the law itself."[16]

A U.S. Senator said that, but some people will dismiss him as a tin foil hat wearer or someone who watches too much TV. The chairmen of the 9/11 Commission has some good words as well.

Unfortunately, Americans just aren't interested. Chickens will come home to roost, perhaps on their children's heads.

He's pretty well loved by Americans, not just by his fellow senators.

I hadn't heard of him. I guess he was more active before I started following politics.
