Public showers/restrooms?

Just a quick question about the showers and restrooms...are they public, no privacy type showers/restrooms or what? I remember someone mentioning this to me the other day that showers were similar to the YMCA.

Example 1: I walk into a shower while in Japan. Is it public, for everyone to see, similar to an American public locker/shower room?
Example 2: Same thing, except with urinals and toilets.
 
The public toilets in Japan have the same range of privacy as public restrooms in America.

At a sento or onsen, bathing is communal. There are tons of threads and websites that detail this.
 
So yes, as nice gaijin has pointed out, the public baths are divided by sex, but otherwise open--all the guys in the guy's half are washing at the faucets, using the little stools, and then after having washed and rinsed (at least to some degree) everyone enters the same bathtub--but it's a big bathtub and not all enter at the same time, of course.

There are some public shower rooms that you can find at places. These are private, but as far as I know, far and few between.
 
On a public pool, the showers and restrooms and such are separate for men and women. There was a changing room, with curtains, and there was a shower room. Each shower had walls and curtains, so it was even more private than what I am accostumed to. Oh, and the good thing, there was a temperature thing for the shower. I just love hot showers.

I'm American, and I'm having problems understanding this sort of situation.

Where in the USA are there public showers?

I thought the same, but from the OP's age, I gather he is talking about the "public" showers in JHS and HS or the YMCA/local gym where it is an open locker room/shower. There is no privacy and all guys shower at the same time in the same shower room. Maybe that's what he means by "public".

When I entered the bathroom at a festival the other night I noticed a bunch of women hanging around the place with their boyfriends. What's that about? I mean, is it too much to ask that men be given the same privacy that women get while they do their bathroom duties? And it's not like we even...

What bothers me most is the women staff who walk through the men's locker room while they're changing like it's perfectly OK. It's something I simply can't look past as a foreigner in Japan.

Truck stops.

Showers are free for trucks with a fill-up, or you can pay to use them. Last info I have, which is a decade out of date, is that the going rate is about six bucks.

The Flying J chain is uniformly your best bet for clean toilet/shower facilities. I recommend them for their facilities for any motorist on a road trip.
 

Lol, I say why not Are men (staff) allowed to do the same thing? I don't know how modest men are in Japan or in other countries, but we American men...it's nothing we haven't seen before, hahaha...
 
You remind me of a story I once heard about the male coach of a female basketball team. To get to his office, he had to go through the locker room. Apparently he was fond of saying, "Close your eyes, ladies, I'm coming through."

How do you think that woman feels about doing that job?? Think about it. Give her a buck (or some yen)!
