Public shaming in China

I don't know what to make of this, public shaming of prostitutes is a tatic that's being used by the Chinese government in an attempt to combat the problem of sex trade. But I don't agree with this tatic, and many people seem to think that this was just like the days of China's Cultural Revolution where people were publically shamed and forced to make confessions.

It's a real shame that something like that may happen nowdays.
I hope the chinese government realizes that, and stop with the parades.

Public shaming has a history in both domestic and international Chinese politics (c.f. PRCs repeated references to Japan's war legacy). Domestically it has been part of the construction of Chinese nationalism, particularly as mentioned, during the Cultural Revolution.

The interesting thing will be to see how the public outcry against this kind of punishment will affect civil rights in the PRC.

I almost forgot about this thread.

I happy to say there has been outcry, especially from Chinese bloggers. Most people are calling this a violation of human rights. Besides, if the Chinese government really wants to combat prostitution this isn't the way to do it.

Modern shaming ?

Seems like we do the same thing today only use the internet. Here in Maine we post all the pictures of pedophiles and where they live; even pass out posters door to door where they live. They have tried websites where they put pictures and info on of men convicted of solicitating prostitutes, people convicted of drunk driving, etc. ; kind of a modern day way of shaming them into behaving.Once in a while you see where a judge sentences a person to wear a big sign around their neck and stand in public to avoid paying a large fine.

Agreed.
One must also take into consider that the whole morality thing behind the trick of the oldest trade was based on the notion that each man will have the opportunity to marry and thus obtain a wife. With the sex ratios being as high these days and with many bachelors who will go without they cannot be judged in the same way as those who have had the fortune to partner up. I would see their situation with mercy rather than one with judgement.

I agree with your opinion, about the humiliation as the oldest tactics in getting a spouse in chinese societies and culture.

China has been known since long time ago, they have less women than men. It is the same with India.
Then as the result, they try to attract the future wifes from overseas chinese background, vietnamese, thais, laos, cambodians, etc.
Especially the ones that have the similarities in background.

However many overseas chinese are reluctant with them, of course. Even some chinese women from mainland, they are so reluctant with those bachelors that are actually uneducated, dirty, close minded, rude, poor, no compatibilities etc. Love can not be forced/ pressed, either it is the love between the same ethnics/ race/ religions, or the love between the different ethnics/ race/ religions.

It is worsened with the raise of nationalist movement in chinese societies. I knew that chinese society especially the traditional ones, like from China mainland, their sense of collectivism is compelling and judgemental so much, including in terms of marriage.
So if you are chinese and you choose to marry the one that is not chinese, you will get social punishment through humiliation, harrassment, boicott etc, like it is said above.

I knew that China national badminton female athlet, named Huang Hua around 1990's. She married an Indonesian, and moved to Indonesia.
When she represented indonesia in international badminton championship, she was harrased very badly and rudely by the judge from China mainland until she cried and withdrew from the match, due to she married an indonesian and changed citizenship.

Couple years of years too late, but unfortunately with regards to pedophiles, it's necessary to inform their neighbors that there is a pedophile in their neighborhood. It's too bad, but people have a right to know who have diddled with children in the past and are capable of doing so again. Totally different from shaming prostitutes.
