I have and favor the Nintendo DS, because it is a very innovative handheld and offers new and original gameplay.
Here is a article which compares the positive and negative features of the Nintendo DS and the PSP.
Read Here To See Why the DS is better than the PSP
To all the people who think PSP is better than the DS read this, also all the people who love the DS but people say it's crap read this.
Responses I have to what people tell me when they say PSP is better than DS.
PSP can play music files on it.
My Response: Yes, that窶冱 true. But, you have to load them on a memory card. Standard memory cards hold about 32MB. *opens iTunes* So it seems that if I had a PSP, I could hold 7 songs which are about 4 minutes each. Then you say, buy a bigger memory card. Well sure, if I want to spend over $100 for a 120MB one which will hold 2 hours of songs. Not to mention the space you窶冤l need to save your games on. A decent MP3 player costs $150 and holds 20 gigabits of music. (see the GBA media player if you want a media player on a gaming system).
PSP can play movies on it.
My Response: Again, just another hidden cost thing that PSP has. Yes, watching movies on the go may sound like a nice feature, but not on the PSP. You see you have to buy the movies you want again on the PSP窶冱 UMD format, which are estimated to cost more than the standard DVD. Also when you do buy a UMD movie, you can only use it on the PSP, nothing else. Also the battery life is crap on the PSP, especially when it窶冱 streaming movies.
Sony uses discs for the PSP, Nintendo is still on the old cartridge format on their new portable.
My Response: Ummm窶ヲ窶ヲ. Hello! Nintendo窶? not on cartridges for the DS. They use cards now. Which, by the way, are extremely fast and the DS can access anything on the card in less than half a second. The PSP uses discs, which are ok for systems, but when your using your PSP while traveling, the PSP will take a long time to load the disc窶冱 information required for the game. It takes about 25 seconds to boot up, 15 between each level and character/menu selections. It doesn窶冲 seem long at first until you are actually doing it. Look at the clock for 25 seconds窶ヲ窶ヲ窶ヲ窶ヲ窶ヲ yeah I got bored after looking at the clock for 7 seconds. And portable gaming is supposed to be for things like passing time by while waiting for an appointment @ the doctors, dentist, etc. And I don窶? know about you, but I don窶冲 feel like passing the time by waiting for my portable gaming system to load a game. That窶冱 just stupid. Also, the PSP reads the disc with a laser (like most things) and while running the laser and processors it overheats. And don窶冲 give me any of that stupid, 窶忤ell in the winter I could warm my hands with it窶 crap because that窶冱 stupid. The PSP also creates a humming noise while in use. Discs are not meant for portable gaming systems.
PSP is like a portable PS2!
My Response: Oh, ok thanks for making that easy. Exactly! PSP is a portable PS2 only with crappy battery life. Now one of the reasons I haven窶冲 liked portable gaming that much until DS is because gameboy was like a portable NES and GBA was like a portable SNES, so I didn窶冲 get one. PSP is exactly like a PS2, so many of the games for PSP will also come out on the PS2 which you already own (many of which will be around $20 to $35 cheaper on the PS2 than the PSP). DS has a slew of features that make it different from other systems. The DS has the ability to do things that weren窶冲 possible before on other consoles. If DS was a portable Gamecube I wouldn窶冲 have gotten one.
The PSP has an analog stick DS doesn窶冲!
My Response: Oh wow! DS has two screens, touch screen, microphone, great and addicting games (most important in my opinion) and PSP doesn窶冲. Also this analog disc (sticks are 3-d, the PSP has some weird piece of paper attacked to it that you slide your finger across to use) is placed in a very awkward position and will break easily. Oh and the DS窶冱 touch screen can be used as a type of analog disc/stick/thing that you can use with the thumbstrap. This works well in my opinion, but I also like the d-pad.
PSP is faster.
My Response: True, if you窶腕e talking about raw power. It does have better processing power, but DS has dual (2) processors which lets it render two separate 3-d images. And if you窶决e actually talking about faster game loading and stuff (because of Sony窶? retarded choices of using discs), then you are so wrong you don窶冲 even know it. So actually DS is faster, not because it窶冱 processors are all beefed up, but because Nintendo does a better job designing their system.
Wow! The PSP screen is so big!
My Response: Ok, DS has two screens, when added together, they窶决e bigger than the PSP screen. Another thing is the PSP screen is very unprotected. The DS offers a very protected clamshell design. Based on Sony窶冱 console past, if you want to protect your big screen then you窶冤l have to by a bunch of screen protectors. Sorry this is a bit off topic but the whole device will be pretty fragile, try dropping it once, you窶冤l need a new one, because of the fragile parts like the screen, analog stick/disc, and disc reader thing (sorry my vocabulary is dead today).
PSP offers a competitive price to the DS.
My Response: I really think it窶冱 hilarious when people tell me this right after I finished talking to them about the music and movie thing. Add these up.
$200 The system (estimated US price, exact yen conversion is 185, but then again the DS yen conversion is like 120)
$50 extra battery (believe me, with a battery sucking device like that you窶冤l need one) (extra DS batteries are $20)
$30 standard memory card (for saving your games, the ds cards have this feature built-in
$20 Case and Screen Protectors (for protecting it窶ヲ. duh!)
$50 One Game (should be the reason your buying a PSP right?)
Equals 350! And I窶冦 being nice on this category, because if you want to use the movie and music feature, you窶冤l need to buy all of your movies again in the UMD format and an extra 120-128MB memory card which will sink you about $100.
So lets say you buy 2 movies at $20 each (there is no retail price announced yet) and a $100 memory card for an extra 2 hours of music. Then your price is jacked up to $490 (nearly 500 for you not so great at math). I spent around $180 on my DS so far. And if I wanted to play mp3s or movies, it窶冱 as easy as pie! All I do is buy the $30 media player from Lik-sang, which plays pictures, movies, and music on any DS, GBA or SP. So with $210 of spending I have a better media player on my DS or even GBA! With that media player, I also don窶冲 have to re-buy my movies or worry about running low on memory card space. (the player takes standard flash cards which most people have for digital cameras and hold around 300MB to 1GB of memory. So if I even included the media player for DS, then the difference is $280. Or in game terms: 9 and 1/3 DS games or 5 and 3/5 PSP games.
PSP has wireless multiplayer and game sharing too.
My Response: Ok, sure, but the multiplayer on the PSP games has not been tested with more than 4 yet. DS can easily do 16 (64 have been successfully linked together with WI-FI) And not many games will even use the PSP窶冱 game-sharing. Would you rather play a bunch of friend in Metroid, Mario Party, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, and other huge Nintendo franchises or would you like to play Hot Shots Golf on PSP instead? And if you look at Sony窶冱 past, their multiplayer has not been the greatest. Take a look at Nintendo窶冱 past. Nintendo is the king of multiplayer and handhelds and wireless gaming (look at the wavebird). This is one of the categories where Nintendo will completely own.
PSP has better RAM My Response: Yes, but only because it needs the extra RAM because of Sony窶冱 media choice. The UMDs (like most disc media) need to load the whole level, menus, or cut-scenes onto the RAM so it can play without being choppy. With the DS cards, the DS can access the entire card so quickly that it barely needs any RAM. If you窶况e said the PSP has better RAM, then you are correct, but you obviously don窶冲 know what reasons RAM is required for and why the PSP needs more of it (because of the UMDs if you didn窶冲 pick that up).
PSP has better graphics. My Response: PSP people tell me this like everyday. Yes, I know it does. Does it bother me? No. Why? First of all, the DS graphics aren窶冲 half bad. Have you seen Metroid Hunters? If you think that窶冱 not quality graphics then you窶决e retarded. (
www.expage.com/theothernews) That link will show some comparisons of DS games to other games. Secondly, ok you may have to think about this for awhile and accept the fact but窶ヲ. I really don窶冲 think the world窶冱 current technology is ready for console graphics on a portable device. Don窶冲 get me wrong I think that our technology is great. But the PSP proves my point. If the technology was ready the PSP wouldn窶冲 overheat or have lengthy load times. I feel like these graphics are a great idea but the system is being rushed. If DS did not come out, I can guarantee the PSP wouldn窶冲 come out until late 2005 in Japan and early 2006 in the states. Also I think portable gaming is meant to have a simpler feel than a console experience. I love to look at the pretty graphics when I play ps2, xbox, and gamecube. But when it comes to portables I窶囘 rather have something quick (loading times) and easy to pass the time. Now the MORE IMPORTANT POINT OF THIS TOPIC IS THIS SO READ CAREFULLY! Sony has purposely asked the game developers to not use the PSP graphics to the fullest because of the battery life. This absolutely proves my point. PSP needs to be delayed to be successful. If given more time to advance in the PSP窶冱 technology, Sony could easily be able to get the PSP battery-life up and maintain great graphics. But I will give it to PSP that it does have better graphics, but I wouldn窶冲 buy a system for that. I buy gaming systems for their games.

...without the good graphics PSP is nothing.
This is in my opinion, even after you've read all this and still think PSP is better than the DS it's your loss. And just getting the PSP because its made my playstation isn't a good reason either. Paying $250 for some compact PS2 is nothing worth buying. All the games made for the PSP are the same games for PS2. If you ask me I'd rather play my grand theft auto on the big screen then on some 4 inch monitor. Sony even forces it's game designers to make it's game to fullest about it's graphics.. because without the graphics PSP is nothing. If your buying the PSP because if can play music and videos gimme a break. It only comes with 32MB, and a standard 4 min song needs @ least 4MB..so you'd only fit 7 songs. And about the video, same with the songs with 32MB you'd only be able to keep a video for about less then 4 min. Besides who wants to keep a big PSP in their pocket to listen to tunes?..and don't you already have media device like a CD player or MD? By the way PSP only can keep 1.5 hours of non stop online play, while the DS can keep it's normal 10 hours of straight online play. Something to think about.
