It's for cold Chinese noodles.

How much are you willing to pay ? (that's not part of the translation)

冷やし中華 はじめました 三五〇円(The kanji 華 is wrong, though.)
We just started serving cold Chinese noodles. \350

It's an advertising flag/board displayed at the front of Chinese restaurants/soba noodle shops. Many people feel it as a sign of summer's arrival in Japan.

I was wondering if anyone was going to point that out.

Yeah, that is kind of sad if it was written by the Japanese teacher at the school.

hiyashi chu-kawa... anyone? mmmmmmmmmm...

If the photo is something the teacher wrote himself, I guess he is a teacher of Japanese language but not a native Japanese speaker (or just he's Japanese but not good at writing with a pen?)

Is this what they call wafu chuka ? Ramen garnished up to look like Soba ?? ☝

Nah, it's Chinese-style leather. Or maybe more accurately laetehr, since it isn't quite 革 either.

Wafu chuka? Never heard of that, unless it is some novelty dish.

Hiyashi chuka is a summer staple.

That looks awesome. I've never had it, but I did eat quite a bit of 窶氾「窶禿 that summer I was in Japan. I liked 窶氾「窶禿 a lot. :hungry:

窶氾「窶禿 is a (North) Korean dish.
窶氾「窶堙「窶堋オ窶吮??窶ーテ appears to be Chinese but is a Japanese invention.

I like reimen, too, though I can't get good ones at restaurants in our neighborhood...

Wow, that doesn't look like what I was eating. It was cafeteria food though, so that could have something to do with it. At any rate, I liked the stuff they called 冷麺 in the cafeteria!

Aahhhh.... wakatta!

I found that hiyashi-chuka is called "reimen" in Kansai region!
なぜ関西では冷やし中華のことを冷麺と言うのですか - 日本語 解決済 | 教えて!goo

So, Korean reimen is 韓国風冷麺 and 冷やし中華 is 中華風冷麺 in Kansai.
In Hokkaido, 冷やし中華 is 冷やしラーメン。:roflmao:
知らんかった!

Haha, I guess that makes sense. Thanks for the info, epigene! By the way, I can't tell if you're up really early or really late.

Oh, thank you, epigene !!! It literally does my heart good to see a low fat plate.

Japanese ramen is traditionally so chewy, so hot, so rich, and so super heavy served in a fat-infused broth But most of all too unique ! I need a picture. The customer never knows how the chef is planning to make them happy.

"Traditionally" it's not.

The chewy, heavy, fat-infused ramen is a recent invention that spread because young people (including my son) love it.
(I hate it--especially when the broth is made with niboshi!! 煮干は味噌汁だ!!)

In my days, ramen "always" came in clear and clean chicken-based soy sauce broth and toppings only of negi, naruto, a slice of cha-shu, and menma. It's called traditional Tokyo ramen now.

By the way, I can't tell if you're up really early or really late.
My schedule becomes a mess when I'm busy.

This looks yummy actually. I would like to try it.

Oh, that's why. My example was from Sapporo. And butter, oil, cholesterol, miso soup cum any dish is apparently a Hokkaido specialty.

:hungry:

Damn, I'm getting nostalgic hunger pangs. But y'know, I'd settle for some nice zaru soba.

Yes, Japanese ramen is really delicious.. I remember the ramen at Yokohama named Yoshimura ramen.. It's Tonkotsu ramen!

Actually I believe this is a Korean dish in the picture. I have lived in Japan for more than 6 years and never seen anything that looks like that.

But yeah I do agree. Japanese ramen is awesome. I always enjoy trying new ramen restaurants.

It's the newest, tastiest way to combat summer exhaustion, didn't everyone know ? Seriously there was a special 猛暑 report on NHK radio today featuring an after hours work group at a Shinjuku beer garden -- eating MOTSUNABE !!! -- I'm not making this up -- which has apparently replaced unagi as the king of summer stamina foods. Must be the power vegetables. Or maybe hydrating faster because we all need another excuse to drink more Kirin. :joyful:

When the reporters weren't laughing they were poking fun at their extreme "genkiness," along with me.
