Hello all,

I am an African American woman and I leave for Japan this June. I am wondering if any of you know where I could find salons that can style African American hair or how I go about researching the different salons? Also, I am pretty tall (5'10) and I am wondering if Big & Tall stores are readily avaliable in larger cities?

Thank you!

Hi Foxfirety!
Enjoy your trip to Japan!
You might have a bit of difficulty in Japan finding clothes, and depending on what sort of hairstyle you want to maintain.
Actually I find that Japanese hair stylists are some of the best in the world. Not all of course, but a good amount of them. Depending on where you live, I might be able to recommend someone. However their english isnt so great.

Clothes wise, just judge their faces when you walk in the store... if they have a worried shocked look on their faces, maybe their clothes wont fit.

I have a very big busted friend who used to try and squeeze into teeshirts, and the sales girls would shriek!

You could always fly over to Seoul, there are places catering for African Americans here. Clothes wise, im not sure about hair though....
So yeah... what style do you have?

Big & Tall stores in Japan charge Arm & Leg prices. Why? Because they can.

I would strongly recommend researching online merchants and checking their overseas shipping policies and rates. (Not all places will take orders from overseas customers). Even with the shipping costs added in, you may generally find it is cheaper to order from outside Japan. And the selection will almost certainly be better as well.

I am going to the Kansai region, but I don't know which city yet. The websites are exactly what I was looking for! Thank ya'll for helping out!!!!

Don't bother with the http://www.techno-hair.co.jp/ too much. It's a business that specializes in helping people who are losing their hair. Can't imagine why on earth it even got mentioned here.

It could come in handy if she eats some bad sushi that causes her hair to fall out.

It was mentioned because I saw it in a magazine featuring You the Rock getting his hair put into corn rows... I can't imagine someone loosing their hair tying it into knots and put under a hot lamp... I concede, ...I only glanced at the website which looked not much like the magazine 'ad' that referenced it.

Do you know what ヒ?ァ窶禿 means?
ed: I don't see that anywhere in the print ad... Don't get me wrong... I would not have known those kanji, but a print ad featuring an artist whom I've seen sporting an afro getting his hair knotted into corn-rows did not immediately lead me to believe it was a hairloss program.

I can well understand now how you came to reference that particular site then.

For me, one of the fun things about the days when I couldn't read or understand much of anything was trying to figure out just what the hell some advertisements were for. Sometimes it is impossible to guess the product at all.
