Path of Philosophy, Kyoto: Tetsugaku-ni-michi

Hi:we leave in 6 weeks for our 1 week in Japan: and have commitments other than travel involved. We have been reading up lots for our very short (one and a half days only) time in Kyoto: 2 nights, (so Nishiki Markets, Gion/Pontoncho are covered after we arrive in from Nara): the half day is the morning of the day we leave from Narita, so we have been advised by our agent to go to Kinkakuji that morning. BUT we have conflicting info about the Philosopher's Path: from 30 mins to 4 hours!! I assume 4 hours is if you deviate to every item of interest: we definitely want to walk the path by the canal: does this extend the entire way from Ginkakuji to Nanzenji???? We are thinking of starting at the Heian Shrine, walking across to the Path at that level, down to Nanzenji, then back across to Shoren-in Temple, Maruyama Park, Yasaka Shrine, Kodaiji Temple, and so on down to Kiyomizu Temple: is this a ridiculous day??? We know it is full-on, but time is a factor unfortunately. Any advice would be welcome: Thanks!!

Sounds ridiculous to me; I spent almost an entire day between kinkakuji, ginkakuji and kiyomizu-dera. If you try to squeeze all of that, you'll just be buying expensive snapshots of each place as you hurriedly race by them. Trying to get so much done just ensures you'll forget that you're on vacation.

Great: thanks: so we will cut some out: but: whereabouts is the canal part of the Path of Philosophy: is it the whole path from Ginkakuji to Nanzenji or just part of it?

I seem to remember that the path of philosophy does run from Ginkakuji to Nanzenji. At least, we spent a day that included the Nanzenji and Ginkakuji and we walked the philosopher's path between them, so it probably does but I'm not sure if it is 100% of the distance.

Its a really nice walk anyway. I think you can squeeze in most of the sites between Ginkakuji and Kiyomizu dera in one day, but it'll be a busy day. Probably it would be best to start at one and just walk to the other and decide as you go which spots are of most interest to you as you pass them.
