In Japan, are ordinary people likely to know which Chinese characters each of the kana characters originally developed from? Or would it only be language specialists who know this?

This seems like the sort of trivia that the average person has a vague-ish knowledge of (even I know あ = 安 ) but wouldn't know in detail unless they had use for it - e.g. somebody with an interest in history, old literature, calligraphy, or something along those lines.
