You can select the speed that the news is read at. Click the middle button at the top (ゆっくり) in the box on the right hand side for the slowest speed. It is not super slow, but slower than the normal (ふつう) speed. It helps to try to listen to the news regularly because they repeat the same news stories. It also helps to read the news in English to know what is happening so when you listen to the news in Japanese you have an idea what is going on. You also need to select the news program that you want to listen to as well.

2200 - 2255 10:00pm NHK Journal (latest news)
1900 - 1930 7:00pm NHK News Today
1500 - 1510 3:00pm News
1200 -1210 Noon News
0700 - 0715 7:00am News

Windows Media Player has a variable speed playback feature - won't work for streaming media of course, only downloaded / CD.

Really? Well, I didn't know that either. Does the quality degrade as you slow down, though? I remember using this gadget called the "riff-o-matic" for musical transcription, and when the speed was cut to 2/3 or 1/2 there would be some interesting sounds in there that seemed to come from nowhere. It would be nice if Windows Media Player didn't suffer from the same problem.

Nope. It's pretty darn good - even if it is a M$ product
(That feature, I mean, as a whole it's a CPU and memory hog with a few other less desirable 'features')
