Greetings to Forum Members,
I am new here and glad I found this site. My interests in Japan began in 7th or 8th grade when I began reading about World War II (the Great Pacific War). This was current history and was much more interesting to me than ancient history. Some of my family's neighbors had served in the war, too.
As time went on, my intersted shifted to the Pacific Theater, and all my extracurricular reading leaned toward that arena. I've attempted learning Japanese language, have taken courses in Oriental art, Judo, Oriental cooking, and even wrote a paper on the ancient art of swordmaking.
My interest in Pacific battles of WWII led me to write a book on the assault of Tarawa, which was an intense and extremely difficult struggle. The book's website is www.tarawatheaftermath.com if you would like to see more. Now I am considering writing a second book, this time about Guadalcanal. I'm scheduled to visit the island with a group from Valor Tours this August.
Guadalcanal was the first land defeat of the Japanese Army during the war, and a turning point in the conflict. A key battle during the Guadalcanal campaign was the battle for Edson's Ridge (also known as Bloody Ridge). Throughout the battles for Guadalcanal, over 20,000 Japanese soldiers perished on the island, most from starvation and not fighting. It was horrible.
I plan to spend one entire night from sundown to sunup on Edson's Ridge by myself to get a feeling for this battle site. If there are ghosts, I hope to encounter them. Currently I am interviewing American veterans of Guadalcanal and am learning what life was like on the island then. And so, my quest.
This story would only be half told if I were to just hear from the American side. I would truly, sincerely, desire to interview one or more Japanese veterans of Guadalcanal to hear what their lives were like on the island. We could communicate via e-mail, regular mail, or I could possibly have a friend of mine in Japan interview the veteran(s). Whatever would be most convenient.
How can I locate a Japanese veteran of Guadalcanal? Are there veterans' organizations in Japan that could help me? Is there a Japanese website that would have WWII veterans' interviews or stories? Any help from Forum readers would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Don

Greetings from the Japan Alps donkenall san !! As I have no earthly idea whatsoever about veteran things here (even after having been here for some 21 years going on 22) I can only wish you luck in your research. I would think that some members who are in the military here may have more clues. Although, I do know one guy who lives down the hill from me who is an officer in the army here--the Self-Defense Forces--and I could try to get around to asking him if he knew of any veteran societies or what-have-you.

You do have friends here in Japan who are Japanese, though, do you not? Asking them could probably be the faster route. I do wish you luck !!

And, since you have joined Jref, when you have the time, please do stop by and chat with us about a great number of things related to Japan and stuff. There is a sister forum on which general discussions take place too--the Europe Forum (which is not only about Europe). I hope to see you 'round !! 🙂

Hummmm????

I wonder if they have veteran's organizations like the VFW or American Legion in Japan? Maybe one of our Japanese members can ask their parents about that. I would imagine any web sites with detailed info on Japanese vets would also be written in Japanese. Hope someone can help you out donkenall , good luck!

Hi Mars Man,
Thanks for the reply. I've been busy and haven't checked the site since I posted my query. My friend in Japan is gaijin, but has lived there 20 years or more in Kyoto . He couldn't help. Your SDF friend may have a clue regarding veterans' groups, though. I would appreciate it if you could forward my message or ask him about it when you can. I have an American friend who will be moving to Japan soon to teach English. She has been very helpful in some translation work. Other than that, I have to helpful contacts in the country.
Sincerely,
Don

I am going to have to find the number and see if they have a web site but the American Legion and VFW have posts here in Japan. They are active here in Okinawa . There is an organization called the 6th Marine Divison Association (?) as well.

Well here is a link to the VFW in Japan;
http://www.vfwtokyo.org/home.php

here is one to the 6thMarDiv Association site too;

Sixth Marine Division

If you can get your hands on this book Typhoon of Steel
Amazon product ASIN 0553243721v=glance&n=283155

It is a great book describing the war here in Okinawa.
