My name is Daniel. I recently joined this forum because I'm in the process of learning Japanese with a future intent of moving there. My goal is to learn the language, make Japanese friends, learn about customs and social norms, etc.
Now for some background. I was in Japan for two years in the 1990s. Served the US Navy and chose a ship in Japan (Sasebo) because I always dreamed of going. While it's true we didn't spend TOO much time in Japan (we were at sea quite a bit), I enjoyed every bit of it while we were there. I learned some Japanese there but years have past and now I only know a few sentences. I got out of the Navy and returned to the USA in 2000. Immediately, I started college and studied mathematics and economics. While Math is my true love, I had to also study economics to be viable.
Currently, I own a beautiful new home in California and work for the State of California. I'm not very happy with the way America is going politically. And above that, I'm not happy with California politically.
I love Japan and would really like the opportunity to start life anew in a few years. In the meantime, I'm learning the language and explore the employment opportunities available.
More about me. I'm a person with many interests and hobbies (this can be detrimental during free time). I have a strong interest in many natural sciences from Physics (quantum, cosmology), Astronomy, Anthropology, Geology. Disciplines such as math, economics, music, computer science.
My favorite styles of music are ancient music (classical, romantic, and some baroque) and modern music (mostly jazz). My favorite composers are Vivaldi, Beethoven, Chopin. Regarding Jazz, I have no real favorite. It's all good.
I play the Piano as well. Currently I'm learning Chopin's Ballade #4. It's difficult, but enjoyable and rewarding.
That said, I have to give my heartfelt condolences to Japan as a whole. If there's any country that can recover from such a destructive event, it's you and your spirit. You'll come out of this strong and powerful.
