Cheering crowds lined the streets of Aomori City on Saturday as the five-day Nebuta Festival began, bringing colour and energy to the Tōhoku summer. Dancers moved in rhythm to flutes and drums, while 16 elaborately crafted floats—some reaching five metres in height and depicting samurai and other dramatic figures—made their debut. All 23 large floats are set to appear in full procession on Tuesday and Wednesday. "I'm amazed by the craftsmanship—these floats are stunning," said a company employee visiting from Tokyo.
