It's people like THIS man that make me embarrassed to live in Britain. I'm so glad I have an Irish Passport...

A bald, naked man, who said he was a British tourist, has gone swimming in the moat of Japan's Imperial Palace. Eyewitnesses said he managed to climb the palace wall, throwing rocks and splashing water at police before being taken into custody. Television footage showed the tall man getting out of the water at one point, chasing police with a rock and a plastic construction site pole. He then went back to the murky water and swam across to the other side of the moat, climbing up the eight-metre stone wall of the palace. He was caught by two policemen, after a chase which eyewitnesses said lasted for an hour-and-a-half. One witness said: "I've never heard of anyone doing such a thing. He must be a bit crazy."

Words cannot describe my embarrassment and anger at the complete disrespect of this disgusting man.

I understand what you feel. Because this sort of stupid behavior instantly reflects on just about anyone from Britain. Even America just even because it also relates to foreigners as a whole who visit. I hope that they seriously deal with this guy. Threatening the police with a rock? If I remember right Japanese police don't have night sticks... hope they grabbed a pole themselves and took him down HARD for threatening to assault an officer.

Frustrated when I see this because I know that while Japanese citizen's do the same crazy-*** crap, it doesn't bring the negativity on foreigners as it does when people out of country do it.

Yes, I also heard that the tourist was Spanish yesterday. This morning, I learned that he's a British national residing in Spain and spoke Spanish to the police officers.

I imagine the Japanese getting a huge laugh out of this, like on their TV shows where gaijin look like idiots. No perfectly sane person would go about this behavior, by the way. He probably tried to pee on the fence of Buckingham Palace, for all we know.

There was a time in the early '90s when the actions of a small minority of my compatriots made me consider taking up my Irish passport option. However, during a motorcycle tour of Cork, Kerry and Galway I met so many Irish people who actually said they were sorry for me for being English, that I decided I'd never want to become that condescending, and opted to remain among the untouchables. (Not that I regard all Irish people as condescending... my grandad would turn in his grave! But these people helped me see some sort of wider perspective.)

As FrustratedDave points out, idiots like this person (although I think there's a high possibility of him being mentally ill) do affect the way the Japanese police and public regard foreigners. It doesn't excuse prejudice, it just provides a reason.

Anyway, from the reaction of several of my Japanese friends in my office, this character seems to have provoked amusement rather than outrage, so I don't think we shoud treat it too seriously. One amusing aspect of the case is that the Japanese police saw fit to tackle one obviously-less-than-capable middle aged naked man with no fewer than 50 officers.

I'm all for a little bit of craziness in this world. But that's just disrespectful.

I'd be nervous as heck to even be at the Imperial Palace, much less even think of pull off this crazy stunt. It's sad to think I'll be associated with this guy. It makes me cringe, even.

What I find interesting is that the man did not get charged. And Yes, the tape was very funny.

Mmnn, after re-reading my post I still don't think it was that offensive. Maybe some translation problem? I read about the 50 officers (admittedly on JapanToday) and found it amusing.

The fact that this guy wasn't charged or hurt (or tazered to oblivion...) is testament to some good policing... but if the report of around 50 officers arriving at the scene is accurate then I still find it amusing.

As I mentioned earlier, the guy is a British national who has residence in Spain and can speak Spanish. (He spoke in Spanish and English to the Japanese police officers.)

He was let go, not arrested, to the dismay and anger among the Japanese who heard to the news.

It seems the police decided not to bother with him because he was found to be emotionally unstable. They intend to put him on a plane in a hurry.

Actually not all of them were policemen, some of them were from fire station. I assume there were rescue people just in case the man drowns in the moat.

Here in Los Angeles, news reports referred him as a "naked Westerner."

Maybe the police considered him as somewhat mentally unstable, and acted with extra caution. He was, at one point, armed with stones and a stick(?), so that should give the police to use their weapons, but they didn't. Glad he surrendered in peace at the end, but I hope he'll pay for any damages he caused, if any. So, where's the bag that was allegedly lost?
