I heard someone ask this question today.
どんな音楽が流れますか
he said it was, what type of music do they play! (in regards to the DJ)
is that a common way to ask? I mean using the verb 流す.

Are you talking about 流れる(intransitive) vs 流す(transitive)?

I'm not really sure. The DJ's is playing the music so maybe you need a transitive verb, but then wouldn't you need the object particle を？

どんな音楽が流れますか and どんな音楽を流しますか are both correct and common. The latter can be used only when asking a person who can choose music(= DJ or maybe the director or something).

The DJ isn't mentioned in that sentence, so without the context telling you it's about the DJ it could equally be "what sort of music is played (do they play) at that club/bar/venue".

Just because the verb is intransitive doesn't mean there isn't some person involved in the action, though. Compare 映画が始まる - movies don't generally start of their own accord, but we don't sit in the theatre saying "hush, the projectionist is about to start the movie".
