I hear the duel was substantially different than Samurai 3. (Which I enjoyed.) I heard from a teacher from Japan that Musashi used an Eiku or oar, and that He and Kojiro were a study in contrasts. It seems like an interesting tale, but it differs greatly from telling to telling and from website to website. Musashi actually says little about it in his writings.

...I think in Samruai 3 Musashi used a oar. In the book he used a oar also, freakin' cracked Kojiro across the skull.
In the book if you read the Foreword, it tells about Musashi and Kojiro in real live were rivals, but I haven't read it in a while.

I find that the lessons Musashi learned from the monk Takuan, his friends Takezo and Otsu, and his struggle to master "The Art of War", by Sun Tzu to be the most powerful part of his life.

Best Musashi bio & references are found in Kenji Tokitsu account "Musashi His Life and Writtings" - Shambhala publications. Each of Musashi's duel are noted with various historical accounts.

> Kojiro was an "young" excellent swordsman, and like Musashi used a long sword, it is thought that Musashi in order to get the upper hand in sword lengths decided to use a boat oar and carved it accordingly. Yes ... Kijiro was killed on the beach by Musashi with a blow to the head.
