Hello, I've been planning to stay in japan for some time while applying to an scholarship and i was thinking in how much money i would need in order to satisfy my basic needs?. I don't want a super luxurious life, but at least i would like, if possible to live by my self in an small apartment or room as long it is possible, you know, i just like to have a place where to rest and sleep alone 😌 So i was wondering if someone who reads this can tell me if 100.000 yen is enough for this??
Thanks for your time :D

I would say no. Unless you get an absolutely tiny shoebox of a place (big enough to touch the walls, literally, as you spread your arms), 100K is not enough. Figure another 50,000 as an absolute bare minimum.

rent
food
utilities
phone/Internet
insurance?

These are the basic necessities. Everything else is a luxury:

hair care
sightseeing
dry cleaning
etc.

I thought so... and how about a student residences. Are they expensive as well?

Thank you for your answer

you didnt say where you want to stay in Japan, depends on the area and city of course.
Student residents are cheeper usually and they are already furnished so you dont have to buy any furniture like a bed or closet but the thing is some of them require your school application that means you have to apply for them through your school.
if you find a room mate or a share house that could help and if you are not into exploring new places that would be easier on your pocket too.
rent.. 30-40 k

rough estimation..
utilities (gas, electric, water).. 7-10 k
commuting (depends).. 10 k
food and supplies .. 30 k
internet/cell phone.. 5 k

hope it helps

I think you can do a veeery short part time job while you are in a university, what I know is the hours of working is very limited (2-3 hours?) Im not so sure about that but yeah. Maybe in that way you could have some luxury in your daily life cause lets face it, we're human. :p

permission to do work as a student
Permission to Engage in an Activity Other Than That Permitted by the Status of Residence Previously Granted

Dorms may let you stay all 4 years, or just one year, in which case you will have to find some low-rent housing (often on a list from the uni, but probably more than the dorm, and you will probably have to furnish that).

If you get accepted, find out what the dorm situation is. Furnishings, some may/not have TV or cooking facilities, paid Internet, etc.).
