Medication In Japan?

Hello all,

I plan on attending Temple University in Tokyo next year, however,
I have a chronic panic disorder that is kept in check by 2 medications,
both of which i have been on for 10 years now. The 2 medications are
Metoprolol Tartrate (beta blocker) and a tranquilizer, narcotic sedative
Xanax.

I have learned through surfing the interwebs that Xanax is not prescribed in
Japan, but it's generic form (Alprazolam) is. However, Alprazolam is prescribed
under a different name than it is here in the United States. It is called Solanax.

I buy the generic form anyway here in the states (Alprazolam). Does this mean
that because it is not "Solanax" that it will be confiscated when I enter the country?
That would be life threatening and I am very concerned about this. The beta blocker
is very common and im sure there are no problems there as it is not a narcotic. However,
If I cannot bring my prescription Alprazolam into the country then my dreams of studying
in Japan have just been dashed

Anyone that can shed some light on this subject will be deeply appreciated.

First, usually it is allowed to bring small amount of medication to another country with prescription from doctor, but here should be some paperwork done. Contact Japanese embassy and ask their suggestion about it.

Also, may be it is not good suggestion, but You can always send these medications by regular mail. They do not check all mails, so it 99% probability that You will receive it in Japan.
