I love the Lucky Cat!!!
Living in San Francisco, I certainly do see it everywhere.
I used to have one, but it broke.
Lucky I can hop the bus to Japan Center and pick up a new one.

A lucky cat lies just outside our kitchen door, soaking up some shade in this otherwise melting summer-like heat. It lies waiting there until next feeding time. Is it alive? Has it melted into the concrete below the roof over ther BBQ pit? Anyway, it is a lucky cat. . . and oh how I sometimes wish I had nothing to do all day but wait until feeding time.

To sum up very briefly, the cat is holding a large 10,000,000 ryo coin, and is waving to beckon wealth, luck, and customers. In Japan, a "come here" wave is done like that with the palm down.
