Length of sunset or dusk?

Just a random question, but how do you calculate how long sunset will last roughly depending on where you are in the world etc? Do people living at the poles have longer or shorter sunsets or dusk stages than people living at the equator?

Really random question i know but its really bugging me .

The nearer the equator, the shorter the dusk 'stage' - but I don't know an exact method for calculating it.

if you live closer to the equator the actual time of sunset is shorter but it comes later. i know because i have to for the sabbath start and end times, but really other than looking it up you would probably just need to take a stopwatch and time it.

Yes, dusk and twilight times are shorter the closer to the equator you get. Here in Virginia, it takes only about 30 minutes to get completely dark. But when I lived in Alaska, it took about 2 hours. And then of course the times of sunrise and sunset are always changing except at the equator, where I think it's always 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of night. The closer to the poles you get, the longer the daylight in the summer and the shorter in the winter.

Another thing I've wondered about - during the spring and fall equinox, on the 21st of March and September, I've heard that there is 12 hours of daylight and night all over the world. I know that in Alaska and in Virginia its 12/12 during the equinox, but I've never found out if it's the same way everywhere.

Thanks for the replies guys ! I was having a debate with my fiance on the but was confused over the subject of the length of time for sunsets, so now i know about length of sunsets and stuff thanks for your replies .
