Legal status of home school in Japan?

In Australia, all States and territories allow full time home schooling but only in Canberra is part time home schooling legal.

Personally I think part time home schooling is the best option, going to school one day a week. Which is why i'll be moving to Canberra if I have kids.

What is the legal status regarding to home schooling in Japan? Is education under the jurisdiction of the national government or prefectural government? In part time home school legal in Japan for citizen of another country?

I knew a English teacher in Fukuoka. She's Japanese, has two children. One is going to high school, while other one is home school educated, and just get enrolled to elementary recently.

So I think the legal may be complicated but it's not like you cannot teach your kids at home at all.

It looks like in Japan homeschooling is still a bit of a legal grey area (what a surprise), with the policies varying from prefecture to prefecture.

Australia also has differing outlooks depending on the State. NSW and Queensland being very rigid and not allowing part time.

With a long tradition of distance learning in their vast remote areas, it is accepted in The Northern Territory, Western Australia and South Australia with certain schools, although the education boards officially 'discourage' it.

I think part time home schooling is actually a very good idea if the parents have the resources and time. The children benefit from Mum and Dad being more personally involved in their education, while they also get the variation and expertise of the school's teachers plus the all important social side with the other boys and girls.

Half the point of going to school is socialisation, learning to interact, not simply diffusing the parents' biases and ignorances.

A lot of people think they are qualified to educate their children, but unfortunately, 95% of them are unqualified (that is to say, incompetent). At the same time, being in Japanese schools, and having gone to a public school myself, it was the luck of the draw. It all ends up a lottery of having had competent teachers.
