The Yamato Museum in Kure, Hiroshima Prefecture, reopened on 23 April following a major renewal marking the twentieth anniversary of its founding. Closed since February 2025 for refurbishment, the museum has updated both its core historical displays and its use of digital interpretation, while expanding the presentation of original artefacts linked to Japan's naval and industrial history.
At the centre of the reopening is the museum's best-known exhibit, the 1:10 scale model of the battleship Yamato (大和), measuring 26.3 metres in length. Based on ongoing research and investigation, more than a dozen sections of the model have been revised to match the original vessel's appearance better. The changes are presented not simply as cosmetic adjustments but as part of an effort to align the reconstruction more closely with current historical understanding.
The museum has also introduced more large-screen visual displays and expanded digital exhibitions, reflecting broader shifts in museum practice. Alongside these are strengthened displays of original materials, including aircraft propellers and other surviving artefacts, giving greater weight to tangible objects and to multimedia interpretation.
Before closing for renovation, the museum had drawn roughly 16.91 million visitors, underscoring its place among Japan's most visited war and maritime museums. The renewal appears intended not to alter its identity so much as to deepen it — refining the iconic Yamato model, expanding the use of digital media and strengthening the historical materials through which visitors encounter both the ship and the city that built it.
