Please read the text on the reverse of this kabuki photo.
The kimono shows an "uro" design:
「烏鷺の争い」(uro no arasoi), literally "battle of the crows and herons", means "the game of Go".
it says about 梅の由兵衛 Ume no Yoshibê:
"The white herons and black crows on the kimono of Yoshibê symbolize innocence and bad luck respectively. This pattern immediately identifies the character of Yoshibê".
Yet, as in the photo or in prints, females are seen in such kimonos as well.
Does that symbolize the same then, and is that restricted to a certain similar female actor role?
