This is my first time on this website. But I am desperate and need help. I hope someone can help me. I am in Okinawa and looking for a job and finding it very hard. I am very interested in working on one of the army bases here (foster or lester would be good) and i have found postings for jobs with MCCS. I even called a restaurant on base and they said they were looking for someone. My problem is that I am Australian and have no affiliation with the army. If i try to apply on line i need a social security number and military affiliation. I have been told my a military friend of a friend that they have people working there of other nationalities and i know they need english speaking workers for the restaurants and clubs. It's so frustrating that I can't contact somebody to send my CV. I have experience and qualifications. If anyone can help me please do! i need a job!

Isn't he/she a spouse of Americans or Japanese?
 
SOFA status is for Americans, whether in the military or a civilian contractor. Have not heard of other nationalities being eligible. Perhaps if you married an American...

Get your friend to clarify who he's talking about. Hearsay without details is worthless.
 
thanks guys, i guess it's impossible. anyone have any tips on finding a job in okinawa? i don't have a degree but i have 4 years experience working in international hotels in hospitality and child care and speak japanese at a solid conversational level. i'm finding it so tough. every "hello work" has a line 1 hour long to even speak to an agent. i guess this credit crisis really is hitting hard everywhere.
 
An Aussie with no degree has just about 3 options short of marrying a Japanese:

1. Working holiday visa (apply back home, not from Japan).
The Working Holiday Programmes in Japan

2. Student visa (permits PT work with special permission).

3. Cultural activities visa (same as #2).

Four years of hotel work doesn't qualify you for any visa. Read the regs. Most non-teaching jobs want 10 years of experience.
VISA

"Solid conversational level" Japanese is also not usually enough for most non-teaching jobs. They usually ask for JLPT level 2 fluency. You need a visa to stay here. Focus on that, but your chances are pretty slim.
 


I am terribly sorry. It seems that you can apply for a job, but nobody knows if you will be hired or not.
 
Hey mirajapan, requests for English teachers is always very high in Japan, sometime "English mother tongue" is the only requirement.

He has no degree and no teaching experience. That automatically means no work visa.

It is an immigration requirement. Whether it's a law or not, I don't know, but if you are caught working without proper qualifications for that visa, you can risk fines, imprisonment, deportation and banishment for 5 years.

Let's just say he is not qualified right now. Get a degree or the right experience.

In the three years since you joined our happy little family here at JREF that fact has only been mentioned about a zillion times.

For an Australian, a working holiday visa may be a possibility. There are requirements and restrictions on that as well, though.

When I looked into a civilian job with the U.S. military I was told the U.S. military hiring me would require that I give up my spouse visa and switch to a visa sponsored by them. I have my doubts about whether they are willing/able to sponsor such a visa for a local-hire Australian.

That there are civilians of several nationalities working on the base is most likely due to the fact that there are military spouses of several different nationalities on base.
 
Hello I am a non-military spouse,currently I am working in a CDC on one of the bases here in Okinawa, however the contract is only for 2 months! Do you know if other bases are hiring as well? I don't want to loose my job.
 
Hi I am a former spouse of Japanese and worked in Japan having acquired Permanent Residence in 2001. I am also looking for a job in Okinawa as MLC or IHA. Please give me the sites to go to for these jobs.

Also I would like to suggest for the Aussie to marry a Japanese or a Permanent Resident of Japan to be able to enjoy and work there permanently.
