I was listening to John Mclaughlin's "Electric Dreams" earlier today, as well as the Keith Jarret Trio Tokyo '96.
Actually I just bought a couple of Diana Krall DVDs recently, as well as Ritenour. I'm not a huge Ritenour fan as I think he has a tendency to get cheesy. Another I have recentyl been getting into is Polish soprano and tenor player Zbigniew Namyslowski. He's pretty original-very contemporary but also mixes in some folk music styles as well as interesting odd time grooves.

Great. I've only watched them once (and I don't have them with me where I am now), but the band was hot. She doesn't have the approach of a singer, but rather an instrumentalist, which means she is really a part of the band. She doesn't think of the band as just a rhythm section backing her up, but actually takes part IN it. Refreshing from a singer. Probably the fact that she also plays piano makes the difference.Philip said:

I used to listen to Miles Davis all the time. ******* Brew was the song that got me into listening to jazz. I put it on a jukebox at a bar once and scared the hell out of people because all the music they played there was rock'n roll bar music.
Other musicians I like are John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker who inspired me to play the saxmophone, but Miles is at the top of my list.

You can't go past those cats-they are still relevant today. Last night I went to see a band called Hollywood Diaspora. They are kind of East Coast meets ECM meets The Knitting Factory meets Jewish music. Great stuff, really subtle, kind of cerebral, and with a groove. Vibes, double-bass, bass clarinet/baritone sax, trumpet. They played in an old Synagogue, and the acoustics were fantastic (though it was COLD).

i have a co-worker who absolutely adores her (married female)

bob james obsession would be my favorite "contemporary" jazz album of all time though

I totally missed this thread up until now! 
I like jazz, but I know nothing about musicians, I haven't really informed myself about them. >< except for I have Charlie Parker CDs ^^
I used to enjoy playing jazz on my flute ^^ it was my favourite style to play.
I will check out some of the musicians you recommend!

Somehow I just can't get into Diana Krall's music. Maybe it has to do with her octave range-it might be a bit too high for me. But I like her arrangement and styling of songs. For modern vocal jazz, I prefer Bubure (or whatever his name is). Talk about smooth.
As for modern jazz, Miles is a god. Give a listen to his Kind of Blue CD and I think you'll agree. Coltrane's Blue Trane is also legendary as well as Wayne Shorter's Speak No Evil. But if your talking about fusion, then it has to be the Pat Matheney Group with Lyle Mays on keyboards. They are also gods. Pat still comes to play in Tokyo frequently and his gigs are almost always sold out.
As for Japanese Jazz artists, the only one I've been impressed by is Naoko Terai--jazz violinist. You should listen to her version of Libertango

Every year Yokohama hosts a jazz festival featuring well known jazz artists. Music from Big Band Jazz like in the movie, Swing Girls, to small groups and vocalists. This year the festival is happening now-this weekend.

Nice, I will try make i next year! That reminds me, we have a jazz festival too in denmark. It's called Copenhagen jazzfestival, very big actually, many cool bands plays at the festival. So come check it out, many celebs plys there as well, like herbie hancock, chaka khan etc.. By the way, we have a really great danish jazzsinger, Caroline Henderson. She usually plays at the festival, worth seeing!
