Last Friday, Japan's first yokai museum, officially known as the Yumoto Koichi Memorial Japan Yokai Museum (湯本豪一記念日本妖怪博物館), or in short Miyoshi Mononoke Museum (三次もののけミュージアム), opened in Miyoshi, about 60 kilometres northeast of Hiroshima City. It is based on a collection of 5,000 items donated by ethnologist Yumoto Koichi and displays historical artefacts as well as interactive digital installations.
Mr Yumoto is a curator at the Kawasaki City Museum which is renowned for its collection of yokai (Japanese folklore monsters).

本博物館の立つ三次市三次町(みよししみよしちょう)は、江戸時代以降、現代にいたるまで、全国の広い範囲にわたって伝承している妖怪物語《稲生物怪録(いのうもののけろく)》の舞台となった地です。このような歴史的背景を持つ地に、日本屈指の妖怪コレクターである湯本豪一(ゆもとこういち)氏からの約5,000点という膨大なコレクションの寄贈を受けて、本館を開館いたしました。三次の地で「もののけ」の世界をご堪能いただき、また稲生物怪録ゆかりの地の町歩きを楽しんでいただければ幸いです。
